I read some of the comments on the article before he was found; one person said they hoped he would float all the way over to New York, I guess they wanted him for an interview. Last I heard as of last night, there was a poll going on at the Weather Channel, asking if the parents should pay for the resources used. There were two given, one no, the other yes. I bet by now the number of yes, they should pay greatly outnumbers those for no, they shouldn't.
I have lost so much faith in the media that I no longer buy newspapers, unless I need packing material. They're mostly ads and recycled news. Not worth buying anymore. There was a time when news reporting focused on the facts, and rarely gave way to sensationalism. Now it's all sensationalism and no facts. Like with the story about the jerk who killed his girlfriend's toddler for not eating or changing his dirty diapers. That story could've stood on its own without mentioning the fact that the girlfriend was a Disney employee.
I once came across a book of copies of The National Police Gazette. No, it's not porn. Its articles were sports and news, and as far as I could tell, little sensationalism. Though quite honestly, some articles were most definately non-PC. Of course, it depends on what you call sensationalism. Chinese were widely vilified, and I recall there was an article accusing Chinese of encouraging young girls into their opium dens, teaching them how to smoke it, and it was implied that the Chinese would take indecent liberties with them while they were under the influence. But there was an episode of History Detectives where this lady had an antique scale case, and the story she had was that it had been used to weigh opium. The scale wasn't in it, but research and testing showed that the story was false--the small scale could've been used to weigh out herbal medicine, perhaps gold, but not opium. As was pointed out, the Chinese were vilified in the 19th century, and if the words Chinese and opium could be put together in the same sentence, it was.
But, as far as this guy being a media whore, everybody has to get attention somehow these days, their Warholian fifteen minutes of fame. Why people can't get attention for doing something good, like working with groups or causes that make a positive impact on society, I don't understand.
