A place to be entertained. Videos, jokes, games, and more.

At the old Disney Hyperion Studio, the screening room where animators would show animated scenes to Walt for his approval was small, with no ventilation or AC. Not only was it hot, but the animators were nervously awaiting Walt's reaction to their work. Thus, the room became known as the Sweatbox. Even after the Studio moved to Burbank and elegant screening rooms were offered to the staff, the moniker remained.
Now SGT has a sweatbox of our own. This is the place to find and post all entertaining topics such as video links, jokes, games, and the like. A general rule of thumb is that if the thread is meant to be informative (interesting news stories for example), or a topic for discussion (like setting up a park meet) then it should go in the Break Room, but if the intent is to entertain the masses then it's home is The Sweatbox. I'm sure there will be grey areas at times, so if you have doubt as to where a new thread should go, just use your best judgement and the SGT Staff will be glad to move it later if you guessed wrong.

BTW we saw the movie today and I have to say.
NO MORE LENS FLARES! I can't see the movie when every light on the ship blinds the camera. Otherwise not bad. Wish it had lived up to the hype, honestly.

So, to keep this sort of on topic. I have a question. Is there anyone reading this who has seen the new Star Trek movie and is familiar with the original series (not necessarily a huge fan, but seen the episodes and familiar with characters and such) that thinks the guy who played McCoy did a bad job?
I'm just asking cause I have yet to talk to anyone who thinks he didn't nail McCoy perfectly.

I think I qualify under your description -- I once knew the original series backwards and forwards, but never became a "Get-a-lifer" like at least one of my geeky friends did.
That being said, I kind of felt that way about
all of the characterizations, not just McCoy... I didn't notice it any more with him than the others. In fact, Scotty stood out more to me -- not because I didn't enjoy Simon Pegg's performance, but because Scotty wasn't such an overtly comical character in the TV series (though he became more so in the movies).
All of the cast had some characteristics that were familiar, and some that weren't. I was able to just file them all away as "due to different actors" and enjoy it for what it was.

Personally, I think the guy who played McCoy probably did the best job out of the cast they had for the movie. As Wombat stated, each of the characters had aspects of the original cast...but I also found Simon Pegg's Scotty to be overly comical, but this was most likely due to the script. The one thing that stood out to me was Chris Pine's run...he has the Shatner/Kirk run down!

I thought the actors did well at bringing the little things back that the original actors and actresses had done to make the characters their own.
I also appreciate the way the introduce the characters, so even if you've never HEARD of Star Trek before, you get to know everyone. I appreciate that they didn't just build on the existing characters with the notion that everyone knows them.
I also loved that, unlike TOS, this NCC-1701 was immense and sensory overload.
I look forward to the next movie.
