The Bible plainly states that tattooing was forbidden in the Mosaic Law: Lev.19:28 :"You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print (tattoo) any marks on you; I am the Lord your God." What you see in artwork is the artist's rendering, not fact. I've seen lots of blue-eyed, blond-haired pictures of Jesus, but people in that part of the world normally have dark brown eyes and dark hair. Earrings were worn in the lobe, and were for personal ornamentation, and even showed tribal affliation. And if you read your Bible a little more carefully, it was God, not specifically Samson's long hair, that was the source of his strength. His mother promised God that her son would be a Nazarite from birth, meaning he was to never cut his hair or consume grape products of any kind. As long as Samson kept his hair long, he was obeying the law of the Nazarite, so God worked through him. When he was shaved by Delilah and her hired man, that broke the law, and God departed from him--until his hair grew back again.
As for self-expression, what's wrong with writing, the other arts or sciences, or expressing one's personality through service? I've never heard anyone being praised for their tats, but what they did--read a few obituaries.
Let's end this before Zazu makes it compulsory.

First off. you can not take the current bible for what it says. More then 80% of the information is missing. (for a very very small but good example. The very beginning Adam & eve. They begot Cain & Able. Cain kills Able and is cast out of the garden. Now up to this point these are the ONLY 4 people mentioned as existing on earth, ye the very next things said is "Cain knew his wife." Now where did she come from? Ah the other books, chapters of the bible that were left out.) Now on that note. Do you really think the persons putting the books together that are trying to make this Jesus Christ person appear to be all mighty are really going to put in there his markings? As for your quote form the "Good Book". Keep this in mind every time you read the Bible. The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew and the New Testament was originally Greek. Much is lost in translation. For example I could say that you were stoned off your ass. Now one person could read thsi and say you smoked pot and got wasted. Another person could read this and say you you hit by a rock and knocked off your donkey. So very little of the Bible in the English you read today is accurate.
"You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print (tattoo) any marks on you; I am the Lord your God."
The key point of your quote is in red. "...for the dead" Cutting of the flesh and certain markings (tattoos) were done during rituals to try and resurrect the dead. Something God would surely have not approved of doing.
Also note that your quote is from the Old Testament. Long before Jesus. many MANY "laws" changed after Christ arrived.
Of course it was God working through Samson The fact still remains that it was his long hair that gave him his strength. You pointed that out as well. without the long hair, God removed Samson's strength. The reason of speaking of Samson was to point out how people will claim "God forbids this and that (long hair on men)" when in fact in their own bible they read about Long haired Jesus and Samson and EVERY other man in that time.
In Short. Yes Jesus and others of that time period had tattoos and piercings. It was very common and actually rare to see a man without a tattoo. I am not saying they were all inked up like bikers. But they did have markings.
Help control A.D.D., Spank a kids ass.

Locked before this gets out of hand.
See Feline? Zazu's not the only one who can make it compulsory.
"A little swordplay, now and then, keeps my mind off sheep!"
"You're messing with my Zen thing, man."
"Dreams are as portals,
flat visions of misty places,
fragments bound below my surface,
but I can write dreams,
they flow from me,
inscribed but now unbound,
I touch them,
and they are real,
and they are real."

I was just on my way over to lock this thread, but I saw that Cujo had done it and thought, "Woah! Someone other than Zazu locked a thread!"
Don't I have a lock somewhere under my belt too? Now I'll have to go look. Or not.
Let's remember to keep it all friendly around here. Please go in the house to the bathroom to do your crapping, not out here on the back porch.
My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

Be careful about that. Many countries strictly regulate heraldry, and you can be fined or deported for bearing an heraldic device that isn't registered to you.
