We were going through catalogs tonight, and found an original METAL slinky for sale in a reproduction box of 1945, from The Vermont Country store!

The original Slinky was metal but I have a plastic on and they did come out with plastic ones later on. They also made a slinky dog and I did have a Mr. Machine as seen at http://www.poof-slinky.com

I had a Mr. Machine too! Nevermind that I was like 5 or 6 when I got it, and it was intended for age 8 and up, but hey, I was a smart kid and even though I hadn't figured out number sequencing yet, I would keep it unassembled, and put it together by trial and error! That added to the fun! But once in a while I would have to ask mom or my older brother or sister to help me, and I played with it until I lost interest. Then I would take it apart and put it away.

The day Mr. Machine broke and we had to throw him away was the saddest day of my young life. They later came out with another one, but it couldn't be taken apart and put back together again, and whistled "This Old Man." I didn't buy it, I wanted the original. I've seen them on EBay, but most are the 1977 ones, not the 1961 ones. My uncle had to search every store in Los Angeles for that to give it to me for Christmas. Yeah, 1961, I was 5. The Vermont Country Store has brought back alot of stuff from the past, even Fizzies. The closest they came to reviving the Seven-Up Bar, a candy bar with seven different fillings, is the Skybar, which has only four. It'd be cool if they could bring that back, along with Mr. Machine. People demanded that Mr. Machine be redesigned because of the concern that the parts, which included a copper strip, would injure kids. I think I cut myself a bit on mine, but I think that demanding a redesign is overreaching. I mean, a minor cut teaches you to be careful next time; it's not the harbinger of some major disaster.

yeah, but that was about the time the "save them from their own stupidity" movement began, thus paving the way for a whole crop of "SG's"

What was your favorite filling in the Seven-Up bar? I think mine was cherry, plus the brazil nut. It's been soooo loooong.... Yeah, you're right, that is when they took the whole notion of child safety to extremes. I also had the original Visible Woman before they yanked it because it was considered "inappropriate" for the 10+ set (another item I got a couple years before the recommended age). It's still sold, along with the Visible Man (funny how I don't remember hearing about that one getting pulled), Visible Dog, and Visible Fish and I think the Visible V-8 Engine, at Edmund Scientific.

Did anyone have a "Creepy Crawler Thingmaker" by Mattel? You poured "plasti-goop" into molds and heated them up in a little uncovered oven. I burned my fingers so many times! Ha Ha, they couldn't have that toy anymore, lawsuit-o-rama!

I liked the cherry filling. Years later, I was in Australia, and had a Cadbury bar that tasted exactly like that! (at the time it wasn't a common candy sold in the U.S.)

I had the for-runner of that. A Mattel Vac-U-Form! Lets see, heat plastic sheets to the melting point, then push them onto a metal form and suck the air out of the mold with a hand pump.

I most certainly did...LOVED IT when I was 4 or 5, what's cooler than freaking out your Grandparents with fake bugs? :twisted:
When I was a more ladylike 6 year old, got the molds and plastic gunks to make bright pink and green jewelery, flowers and butterflies that you could glue pink rhinestones and pin backings on to, probably fostered my current pin problem! ;)
I always had parental supervision, otherwise the house would surely be gone.... :p:
