You mean a bustier? Pronounced BOOST-tee-yay? I was doing a bit of research on the Colonial Willimsberg site--didn't write down the URL, but did a search for "history of clothing"--and it's interesting. They used to have not only women, but children of both sexes wearing stays in order to promote correct posture. They were much more comfortable and practical than the corsets of the 19th century.

It's kind of amazing what you can find on the CW site. I used to work for the foundation myself, as an Orientation specialist at the Visitor Center (Purpura grew up in Williamsburg, and we lived there until we came back to California in 2004.)
