Re: Disney is
What I meant in that I wanted to see Song of the South is that I wanted to see a film that I regard as great. In the short trailer for the Princess and the Frog,I wasn't seeing that. It will probably take a longer trailer for me to really make a better decision. I didn't like the bug character at all but not because I was offended , I just didn't like his design. It was more gross than funny to me. It had nothing to do with racism.
If my memory serves me correct, the last time Song of the South was released in theaters in the US was in 1986, more than 20 years ago. I was ten at the time. There is an entire generation who have no idea who these characters are or that over half of the characters they see in Splash Mountain are (in DL's case) recycled America Sings characters and are not in the original film.
I want this film released. The public needs to decide for themselves. I shouldn't have to resort to a bootleg copy or a region-free VHS to see this film.

I think the biggest problem with SOTS is the costuming for the white people. They were supposed to be poor. That's why Johnny and his mother were moving back to the old homestead. The costumes they wore were more representative of anti-bellum (which most people associate with the Old South) than post-bellum which happened after the war. I'd love to see it come back out with commentary.
Now on to The Princess and the Frog, when it was announced that the "princess" was going to be black, it was hailed as a step forward. So I don't really see the African-American community complaining. They will finally have a princess that "looks like them".
And does anyone else think she sort of looks like Belle when she grimaces?

It is a step forward. What Disney does with that step remains to be seen.GaTechGal wrote: Now on to The Princess and the Frog, when it was announced that the "princess" was going to be black, it was hailed as a step forward. It is important to have a princess who isn't white. It's hurtful when all the representations of beauty and desirability around you are people who don't look like you. Mulan was important too, and so was Nani, for that matter.

It is a standard forum acronym.
Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long.

Although, IIRC, it originally comes from H. Rider Haggard's book She. Rumpole only popularized the phrase.GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:You have to watch the Rumpole of the baily (DW's Favorite series) to get the full impact!
