Used to go to Woody's restaurant down the street where you could make your own sundaes-think Woody's is still there! :)
Woody's was my favorite! You dressed your own burger with whatever you wanted. Like Fuddrucker's. The one we went to was on Rosecrans! In Torrance, I think. I used to request Woody's for my birthday!

Yes, I also remember Slinkies. I got a kink in mine, too. The house we lived in at the time didn't have stairs, so we pretty much did the back and forth between our hands with it. Though my brother was fond of lying in the hallway with the Slinky waiting for someone to go by, and shoot it out at them. I also remember those commercials for the P.F. Flyers shoes. Kid named Tommy rescues a kidnapped astronaut.
And of course, there was Mr. Machine! My family looked all over L.A. and Ventura Counties trying to get me one for Christmas the year they came out. Got it, even though at the time I was really too young for it, and it wouldn't pass today's toy standards because part of the fun was assembling it, and there was a strip of copper that could cut you if you weren't careful. Even though I still was working on number reading and sequencing at the time, and the parts were numbered so 1 connected with 2, etc., I put mine together mainly by trial and error. Once in a while, though, I'd get frustrated and have to ask mom or my older brother or sister for help. Once I got Mr. Machine put together, I played with him alot. But then when I was done, I'd take him apart again. I had him for several years until a part broke and we had to throw him away! :bawl: But I have seen some of them on Ebay; however, most are the updated, no-fun 1977 models. I prefer the 1961 models--the originals.

The building is still there. It's an IHOP now...blue roof & all.
The restaurant across the parking lot (used to be the "Jolly Roger" or something like that) is now the "Stick & Stein"...still a restaurant but now with a sports theme.

Red Goose Shoes! Pull the goose's head down and you'd get a golden egg with a toy inside. Yes!

I just cut out an article on Sheriff John out of the paper--"Sheriff John relishes all those cakes." Sheriff John will be 89 on Oct. 3rd, it says. He lives in Boise, ID. There's a picture of him at the Emmys in '98, from what I can see of him, he still looks pretty good. I remember reading in Engineer Bill's obit that they were going to make a rip-off of Sheriff John's Lunch Brigade, but Engineer Bill said no, make it a train-themed show. Sheriff John knew Engineer Bill, said he was a nice guy. Both had the same fomula for success--they never talked down to the kids. Too bad we can't have shows like that anymore--it also says, and I remember this, Sheriff John would say grace before having lunch with his Lunch Brigade. Interesting how the article was written by the same reporter who wrote Engineer Bill's obit.

I always felt like Sheriff John was talking just to me. He was so sincere and trustworthy. Yep, wanted to marry him.
