I've heard that about Coke and Orville Redenbacher. What I've heard is that those companies pay their advertising bills with product instead of money.

The way I heard it was that Coke discounts the syrup based on the number of logo cups purchased, and Disney's order is so large the syrup is technically free. I do not know if this is true, so please do not repeat without a disclaimer, but it made sense to me.

But back to the OP, is it really that easy to confuse MGM with the TTC?

But why would they do that? After all, they are out to make a profit, and we sell a ton of Coke products. Perhaps Disney gets a discount for buying in bulk, but I would imagine it wouldn't be so much of a discount that we are technically getting it free. Again, they are out to make a profit, and I'm sure tehy make a doozy of a profit off of Disney due to the exclusivity of the contract and the sheer volume of product sold.

There's no way of knowing for sure -- without either Disney or Coca-Cola going public with the actual numbers -- but I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility, especially given the competitive nature of the cola market. They'd have to make the business decision that whatever lack of profit, or even expense, associated with being the sole provider of soft drinks for Disney was worth (1) the exposure to the millions of guests that will be drinking their product and (2) keeping their competitors (read: Pepsi) from getting the same exposure.

Here's what I found on the subject:

On a site called Disney Lies (about Disney urban legends):

Legend: Because of the advertising value of having its products featured at Disney theme parks, Coca Cola provides Disneyland with all of its beverage products free of charge.

Behind the Legend: This is true, but highly misleading. For years, Coke has had an advantage over rival Pepsi because it provides its products free of charge to all of its customers. The company makes up the loss by requiring that beverages only be sold in official cups or containers -- and charging an enormous amount for those contains. The container charge is based on a sliding scale depending on the customer. Individual consumers, purchasing beverages at a grocery or convenience store, pay only a few cents for the can or bottle in which their beverage comes. At the other end of the scale, movie theaters and theme parks like Disneyland pay as much as $2.00 for a single drink cup, making the exorbitant prices charged for drinks at those locations completely understandable.

Umm... you do realize that Disneylies.com is a joke site, right, not a reliable source of information? I mean, check this, about Walt:
There is a persistent rumor that just before his death in 1966 Disney was cryogenically preserved -- frozen, if you will -- so that he could be resurrected at a later date when medical science had the knowledge to prolong his life. This is absolutely untrue. Disney was, in fact, freeze dried and to this day attends corporate board meetings in that form.
Yeah, Disneylies also says that a cult comes and sacrifices a cat once a month in the Haunted Mansion. They do dispell the rumor that the cat is always black.

Disney parks are full of advertisements. I don't think they would cut such a deal. Remember, in the days of yore when all the rides were sponsered by "chevron" or "dole"? 'Cha.

Legend: Alligators dwell in the sewers beneath Disneyland.

Truth: There are no sewers below Disneyland, and therefore no alligators in them. The secret tunnels are infested with mutant rats, however.

And before digital cameras became affordable, the Disney Parks and Resorts were responsible for approximately 5% of Kodak's worldwide consumer sales.
