Actually it does happen. Luckily the tower console is off to the side so I'll be safe. But also it is in our spiel that if they have "loose-fitting shoes, such as flip flops, crocs, or sandals" they should remove them and put them in the storage compartment under their seat or leave them on the ground. Every once in a while one will fall off and land in the pit, next to the cherry picker used in emergency "in-flight" evacuations. (It hasn't been used yet). That requires them to call maint to retrieve it. LOL

I would think that the cherry picker would be used for inflight evac if the ride mechanism faults but not for a area wide outage. Unless the picker is seperately powered (such as an internal combustion engine) it is probably powered by the electric grid. Thus if there is a power outage, the picker would also be unusable. I suspect that it can be individually powered for emergency evac but proabably requires someone from power distribution to throw the switch to send backup power to that particular device. And it would probably be just as easy to throw the emergency power switch to the main show controls long enough to evac.

So (as an outsider with only speculation on his side) I would expect the picker is only for mechanical failure of the show equipment.

(Now I'll let someone closer to the building confirm or tell me I'm full of it. :D :)

It's actually a regular construction cherry picker. The building was actually built around it and it runs on a battery/engine. For a power outage they have back up motors which can lower the carriages to the ground. Basically what happens in the event of a power disconnect is that the carriages stay in the air with the brakes applied. The ride has to be powered back up and the carriages manually lowered to the ground. It doesn't happen often, and also is the reason that hitting e-stop is terminable offense. Instead they have a ride stop button which stops the carriage's motion and the film. The carriages remain in the air until the "Return to Load" button is hit. But the Ride Stop button can be locked down for Ride Access Control in the event of an intrusion that requires investigation within the "motion envelope".
LOL I know way too much about this ride already.

IMO, you should always take your shoes off on Soarin...makes it way more fun....although if you have been wearing closed shoes all day in the parks I think it may be "nicer" if you keep your shoes on.
