The computer itself is still under warranty but I would like to try to save my files (aka pics) I have in it. Dell's solution to everything is scrub the thing and reload all the stuff. It will cost at least 60$ to have a local guy "maybe" try to retrieve the stuff I want then I still have to scrub it. SIGH....We are so broke right now it aint funny so the computer is on the back burner for the time being.

Vicky, is the problem with the OS or with the hard drive itself? If the former, you might be able to get an external mount for the hard drive, then hook it up to another computer and download the pics there.

When I talked to Vicky, it sounded to me to be an OS issue.
If she was here, I'd fix it for her but to ship it back and forth is going to be about $70
Vicky, If you pull the Hard disk and ship just that to me I can probably get the data off of it.

Are all the males on this board computer whzzes? We have rthe highest ratio of computer whizzes than any other boards except the tech boards! Wow!!!!!Whan I have a real problem I know who to ask!
The dishwasher worked, to get rid of the smell. It is just that Ralph has claimed dibs on the doing dishes and keeping the kitchen clean. We all know how that works, when a man says he will keep the kitchen clean.
So I have comandeered the sink and scrubbed the scrunge outa tham and then ran the diss washer and it worked. Thanks guys! Never had to move a pipe ot hose! :D: You all are geniuses! ;)

I could do the same thing, I have "certain" software available to me that can pull the data, and restore..Where is she located?

Can we help it if our definition of "clean" differs slightly from yours? As long as the mold on the counter isn't more than 1/2" thick we can say that the counter is surfaced with a plush carpet to prevent breaking eggs and such if something is dropped. ;)

I can't believe how much people charge for simple computer work...especially if it entails a house call. I did a thing for a little old lady who happens to be a Smithsonian Scientist. She asked me how much I wanted her to pay for the job (essentially a reimage and optimization job) I told her that it took a while, but it was really easy and, since I had taken it to my house for the actual labor portion, I had been able to do other stuff at the same time...so basically, I couldn't come up with a number that I was comfortable charging her. I told her to pay me whatever she wanted to. She ended up giving me a check for $300 as well as a very nice bottle of wine from her cellar!
I tried to tell her that I couldn't accept all that, but she was having none of it. She insisted that I take the money and the wine and enjoy. I must admit, I did enjoy! :)
Where is Vixen? She's in Cali, right? If she were here, (greater DC Baltimore area) I'd offer to take care of it, I have an external hd housing that does both ide and sata to usb that I use for just this type of thing. Pain in the butt to change over drives (they could have used normal screws, but no, they go ahead and use those stupid little laptop screws just to make me carry an extra set of tools!), but it's a very useful tool!
Speaking of computers, my company has our christmas party scheduled for tommorow. I'm kinda hoping to come back with some stupid IT Guy Tricks... At the same time, I already know the one stupid IT Guy trick I'm very likely to run into no matter what: my gigantic boss (6'5" and I'm pretty sure more than 230 or so) getting my attention to tell me a girl is hot, but forgetting how big he is...the upshot is, he'll "nudge" me and make me stumble if not actually fall over!

That's due to the massive liability in this litigation-happy world. It got to the point where I live that nobody goes to a "house-call" without a partner. Not for technical assistance but to have as a witness.
