No stupid question. Those of us who are not regularly shaken not stirred hear the word Earthquake and we tend to become concerned for those in the area that we know (and those we don't). Showing that concern is never misplaced. It is like us mid continenters who hear Hurricane and immediately think that everyone within a couple hundred miles of the coast are being suddenly swept out to sea (that's what all the TV pictures look like). And those of you who are not in the midwest hear about a tornado that swept across several states and figure that every building in those states are gone (tho the reality is that the devistation my be bad but confined to a path less than a mile wide). Each area has its own hazards that outsiders may misunderstand. But even when a particular hazard has been devistating to a relative few people it never hurts to show our friends and aquaintences that we care enough to at least express concern. That is never stupid.

On the other hand it also opens the door for us survivors to beat our breasts and show that such insignificant things as nature don't scare us (until the tornado is moving right towards you and you don't have a basement to hide in). :D:

That's where the Pacific Northwest has an interesting choice for its disaster du jour: The Volcano! Plenty of warning, covers a HUGE area with a cloud of ash, spectacular like nothing else but harmless if you stay far enough away.

Yeah, I know, they're on the ring of fire, but the only earthquake predicted for the NW (and it's predicted most heavily for any second now by the doom-and-gloom, you-gotta-wanna-stay-under-your-bed-in-fright-types) is the 22.6 one that will wipe the entire west coast, probably parts of Australia
and everything in between off the map.

At least, that's what you'd think listening to them...

Absolutely, NEVER stupid to care and show compassion!

Like I said "Hold on Lisbeth....It's the REALLY big one!" I have heard different theories that these little ones take off the pressure to stop a bigger one, and the opposite that they are just a precurser to a really big one. Quite frankly, it is not an exact science and I think they don't know squat about when and if the *BIG one* will ever happen and where. Mother Earth farts all the time and we can do nothing about those farts. Earthquakes will happen, tornadoes will happen, hurricanes will happen, Volcanoes will spew and it is just something we need to learn to live within the boundaries of.
Caring and showing compassion for those caught in a disaster is just natural for us with hearts. We can do what we can to help them and hope that they do not suffer again from a disaster, but history shows we will need all the compassion we have to get through the next 100 yrs here.
It is good to help out when help is needed and caring is a good thing.
But you can bet I won't build a house on a fault line, or on the Florida keys or at the base of Mt. St. Helens! Even then, no matter where you live, each region of the world has it's weather phenomena! You can run, but you can't hide!

Unless it's right beneath you, a 5.6 means you pick up your beer so it doesn't spill, then go back to drinking as usual.
Yep! That's how it felt at my house. I live about 30 miles north of San Jose. It was a little weird because for about 20 minutes earlier it was like someone had given my dog caffeine. Nothing scary just kind of a fun kiddie coaster type ride.
Then the sister called concerned concerned about our grandparents. Someone told her that it was an 8.0 ( )centered in San Jose. (Gotta love the mis-information that comes right after something unexpected.)
But everyone's ok, & no real damage.

That's the one where Western California falls into the Pacific Ocean, and Lex Luthor "worthless" desert land becomes Costa Del Lex. Luthorville. Marina del Lex. . . ?
