[quote="vixen101485"]

I have to laugh at those ones freaked out by the biometrics scanners at the parks."OH MY GOD, I dont want to touch something someone else did" Why on earth do you ever leave your house then? Wear plastic gloves. Wonder if they ever saw a small child LICK a railing? LOL

I remember those! Last trip to WDW was '04 and I touched them without hesitation. Umm hello, you're touching stuff others have touched all day long at any of the parks<or any other public place for that matter>. But I have seen those types of SGs you're talking about and of course I've also seen the opposite end of the spectrum as noted in my mom & daughter restroom story :barf: I have also witnessed children licking rails, gates, benches, safety lap bars, etc. A lot of times they are the children of the same parents who are "lysoling" everything down for them LMAO!

I was raised "normal" if you will..........was always one of those kids who caught everything due to the asthma issues but when I was well my mom just let me be a kid. I also work with children so I see the spectrum @ school with different families and trust me by the 2nd or 3rd kid we see all kinds of stuff LOL  The pacifier/dog legend does exsist! LOL

p.s. the story about the daughter/mother not wanting to take the time to wash their hands...that just skeeved me out...

<packs wet ones for trip this weekend>

Oh yeah, I still shudder :dropmouth I know there has been much discussion about SG parents on here<and with good reason>but it is still mindblowing to witness it live, no matter how often you see it. I always think I've seen it all but then some parent either at work or DLR or some other place will set a new low!

Oh, good. She really didn't deserve that last night. Glad you saw it too. I certainly understand (now) where you are coming from.

One of the things I had (note past tense) a hard time with at first was the fact you (ICSP) let it all hang out and let us feel about it the way we will. At the same time, I appreciate it. The thing I had (note past tense) a hard time with was the fact that you are like the opposite end of the spectrum of what is wrong with society today, like to fight back you are doing the exact opposite, which can be abrasive. You're one of those people that you don't care if people like you, but you WILL have our respect, dammit. So once we get past the abrasiveness and see that that's just you, I think most of us here are cool with you and see you as an asset to SGT. Others just think you're an ass, and others still just want to feel your butt. I remember on one of your first posts, I said something to Cranbiz up on the hill at MK that I really wasn't sure about you... now I am. You're completely nuts and belong here with us at SGT.

I've been all over the board, and darph is so lost it's not funny. I have a feeling I know where in that paragraph he's stuck... :D:

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

But my rant came from a visit to the store yesterday. There was a mother in line in front of me with two kids. One of the kids wanted to show me a toy (yes, I realize kids shouldn't talk to strangers, but, I really look a lot less bitchy in person..I look like a school teacher so I'm told) anywho..the mother immediately apologizes for his "behavior" and tells me he has autism. Umm..ok..not sure what was wrong with his behavior..but, ok..

The other kid was bouncing off the walls obnoxious and the mother didn't give him a 2nd glance. She did say "stop it" a couple of times, half heartedly. So the kid that is just shy and liked my hair and felt comfortable enough to talk to me needs meds, but the one bouncing off the wall being ignored didn't...I think both kids just needed some attention.

Either way, my sarcasm towards DM was unprovoked. My apologies. I do realize some kids have real issues that need to be addressed. I just wish more people would address those issues with love and kindness rather than drugs (not saying she drugs her son, sounds like she is doing the love/understanding/kindness thing...20 years ago, miracle drugs to calm kids didn't exist..kudos)

>
Apology Accepted. Actually, 20 years ago, the incidence of Autism was estimated to be 1/10,000. Now the incidence is estimated to be at least 1/150. Is it over- diagnosed?...Possibly, but I think that it is better to intervene as soon as any symptoms are noticed to improve the outcomes.
I find your story of meeting a child with autism interesting, as I can relate to the hyper-vigilance , and explanation regarding "the behavior", and the other kid taking advantage/revenge for the attention they also deserve. I can only assume that the Mom is overwhelmed- I sure was, but I kept working and hoping...after saying a word once or twice at 12 months old,and then stopping entirely, my son began to speak again at 4 years old. I am lucky, I know others who have teenagers with autism who do not speak.
I hope that everyone out there will learn more about Autism, as it is very likely a close friend, associate, or family member will be affected by it.

I have been thinking about how to respond to this for a couple of days without hurting anyone's feelings, lol.

But, all i can come up with is THANK YOU!! YOU "get it"...lol

The abrasiveness comes from a New York upbringing...we didn't beat around the bush, you say what you feel and it's done. No hard feelings, it's said, it's over, and everyone is happy. I respect people that are frank with me. I hate beating around the bush (In NY, there is no time for small talk, it's a busy pace) and I realize not being 14 years removed from there, that the rest of the world isn't like that...I just tend to forget it at times.

I will admit it takes a real effort for me to empathize, as empathy wasn't needed in my household. We said what we meant, we may have or may not have made changes in our behavior based on feedback, and we moved forward. It's odd, because at school, I can empathize with people, but on the net, not so much.

Keep me in line mon marcupial favor..swat me when I act up, I know it's needed A LOT, and I won't hold it against ya...Darph and Ktulu can spank me..

and after the spankings....(insert castle anthrax Monty Python quote here)

I had always been under the impression it didn't matter what you got on your hands so long as you wash them good before eating or anything like that.

That's how I feel. I'll clean up all kinds of stuff barehanded and it doesn't bother me because I know that I can wash my hands when I'm done. (Except when I worked in a nursing home.) :twitch:

I agree with exposing children to germs. I used to sterilize everything for my daughter when she was a baby and she stayed sick all the time. She had asthma, RSV, unknown bacterial infection, and she had colds all the time. When she was about 2 or 3 she started playing outside in the dirt with my grandma in her garden and since then she has been 100% better.

She washes her hands before she eats and I wipe public toilets off for her and that's all the sterilizing I do now and she is better off because of it.

You don't want germs? Don't fly on dumbo. Our flight tickets are the mid-day snack of every 3 year old, as well as held by the mouth of many flustered parents trying to buckle up. Pretty gross. Some CMs will try to clean or throw out flight tickets that are dripping with spit... still nasty.

Without multi-quoting (isn't supposed to be part of the upgrade?), I'll just make one post and comment about several topics:

Not only does society overuse anti-bacterial soap, and over prescribe antibiotics, but IMO, we also over immunize. Today schools require immunizations for kids before they enter school, and it seems that each year, more and more immunizations are required. Obviously there are certain diseases that we do not want our kids to have, but why do we not want our 6 or 7 year olds to get chicken pox? What's wrong with them? Wow, they are itchy little "pocks" that with a few corn starch baths to stop the itching, will go away in a week or two. And as a bonus, you'll be less likely to get shingles as an adult. ;)

Why are we getting rid of petting zoos? Because kids come down with E. coli ? How about insuring that kids wash wash their hands before they eat? I think someone said it earlier, the helicopter parents Lysol the room, but are the same parents that don't make their kids wash their hands after going to the bathroom ?

BTW, several months ago, I read on board W where a mother drugged her little darling 5 year old daughter because she would not go to sleep. And all of the "I-moms" didn't see a problem with it.
