Disney uses the terms on stage and off stage. Disney see the CM as an actor who should not be seen off stage in costume. It would be like seen an actor with full makeup and costume on at the gas station. Disney wants guests to see only CMs and guests. Not CMs being guests.

The best ways to understand this to be drunk or sitting in the sun way too long, lol. Simply put they want to keep the image pure. It is at time a pain in the butt and stupid but them are the rules and failure to obey could be the ultimate punishment known to mankind, they will turn you into a doll in Small World.

I've heard lost children who are not promptly claimed also suffer this fate. :)
