Funny, I don't associate "Slowly I turned..." with the Stooges.susislicker wrote:Why you oughta...Slooooooowly I turned, step by step, inch by inch...
My single favorite Stooges moment didn't even involve them doing a thing except standing there. It was their cameo in It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. Buddy Hackett and Mickey Rooney are trying to land a plane at an airfield, when neither of them knows how to fly, and the pilot (Jim Backus) is passed out drunk. At one point the field's crash truck has been called out, and the camera does a slow pan across the faces of the three firemen.....Larry....Moe....and Curly Joe DeRita (sadly this was long, long after both Curly and Shemp had passed away.) They just stand there, doing nothing and holding fire equipment....and, because of the implied mayhem, they were never funnier.
See it here...

Re: Time to make a decision!
You know you may be right...Ralphie is the Stooges maniac here and he told me that one, but I seem to remember that being Abbot and Costello as well from an old movie. I used to love to watch Saturday movies back in the 60s and 70's. They had on all the classics, Abbot and Costello, Shirley Temple, the Musicals all day on Saturday. I wioll check that quote. I believe you may be right, sir. I loved Abbot and Costello, my favorites, Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein! I looked at the TV Guide last night for AMC movies and they had a movie made in the 1990's Classic indeed. They should be showing alal those old musicals and classics from the 20's, 30's and 40's, but I guess Ted Turner might own most of em. That is why you cannot get The African Queen on DVD yet. The bastard won't release it. I hope he does eventually....GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:I thought this was an Abbot and costello bit? : : : : Does anyone know the origin of the phrase "Slowly I turn, step by step, inch by inch"? I been looking for almost a year, but can't find it.Thanks!
: : : It's from a Three Stooges movie, "Gents Without Cents" made in 1944. Curly says "Niagra Falls" and Moe (who was under some sort of post-hypnotic suggestion? I don't remember) turns on him and launches into the speech. (I dunno. Seemed funny when I was a kid.) See http://www.imdb.com for good sources of movie quotes, trivia, etc.
: : This was also from an Abbott and Costello movie entitled "Lost in A Harem".
: : Many of Bud and Lou's best-known routines were vaudeville and/or burlesque standards. The "Niagara Falls" bit ("Slowly I turned, step by step, inch by inch...I took my revenge.") was performed by many teams before becoming identified with Abbott & Costello.
: I had a suspicion that it might be an old burlesque routine. I met a man once, in 1968, who was a high school earth science teacher from Colorado who, as a hobby/scholarly pursuit, spent his summers tracking down old burlesque comedians to record oral histories of the routines, many of which were not written down. People on the circuit just knew them. He also interviewed strippers, many of whom were elderly now, and recorded some wonderful stories. I don't know if or where he ever published them. Ring a bell with anybody?
It must indeed have been a burlesque or vaudeville routine. I've seen an episode of "I Love Lucy" in which Lucy wants to go on stage. An old vaudeville actor comes to her house and gives her an acting lesson. He sets out to teach her the act "Slowly I Turn." This actor was traumatized by a bad marriage--I think his wife left him--to a woman named Martha, and he can't stand to hear her name. As he demonstrates the vaudeville act, every time Lucy innocently says "Martha," he hits her."
So Ralphie does his Stooges, he is watching some old Stooges films on DVD right now...
