Then there is this.
Two Words: Brussels Sprouts.
They are simply inedible!
Yes, I am still a five year old when it comes to this things. They are made by Satan I tell you!
I'm with you! I did read an article somewhere about a certain gene that made people HATE Brussel Sprouts, so I'm using it as an excuse- Genetically Unable ;)
Do not know if that gene exists for Brocolli,Hobie :p:

One way or another, I'll find it.

Broccoli and Brussel sprouts are cruciferous, meaning if you can taste phenylthiocarbamide they'll taste bitter. If you're also a "supertaster" (are unusually sensitive to taste), cruciferous vegetables taste
very bitter, meaning supertasters are much less likely to like them (the results for people in general who can taste PTC are more mixed).
Cruciferous veggies are supposed to be good for you, but I'll only eat cruciferous vegetables drenched in sugar (sweet and sour coleslaw kind of things) or fats (usually cheese). Not sure if the healthful values of the veggies really balance out the additives. :p:

Spinach is good either way !!
When I was a toddler it became one of my favourite canned veggies, as Dad would make it when mom was working evenings. I love canned spinach! I only wish my wife and daughter did too.

I have never worked up the nerve to try it canned, but I like frozen cooked and I like it raw. Supposedly people who like raw spinach but don't like cooked dislike the texture of cooked, however I find the texture of cooked spinach interesting. The metallic taste I'm less enthused about. I assume I'm tasting the iron. Still like cooked spinach, but if you added in canning it'd be even more cooked (I just get the frozen stuff to warm), so even more weird tasting, is my theory.
I believe a lot of food likes and dislikes are based on association - I think it's scent that's supposed to be most strongly associated with memory, but since scent is such a strong part of taste for most people food kicks out the memories pretty well, too.

I like my spinach done in the skillet. Just a little bit of water, and then when the water has evaporated and the spinach is all soft, add the butter.
Mmmmm....

Don't care for brussel sprouts either. I think my mom used to overcook them(in the microwave no less) and the only thing they were good for was shoving one in each cheek and pretending you were a squirrel until Dad yelled at you.

While I'm not saying that there aren't some so-called "foods" that don't deserve to be considered edible, I suspect that in many cases, the problem lies with whatever the dish in question was being badly prepared when it was severed to the person as a child, in addition to some things have a reputation for being bad tainting one's perceptions even before the first bite.

I have the anti-cilantro gene (or whatever it is - evidently the jury is still out on whether it's a gene as such, or some other cause). That stuff is FOUL. I walked past a farmer's market stall with a ton of fresh cilantro, and it was like walking through a men's locker room that had been slathered in cheap soap. It is SO not something I want on my food!

I am with you on that. I have always said anything spiced with cilantro has a soupy taste. My family tells me it is in my imagination.
