Fourth of July Monorail Incident

Clear up on the NTSB... they do NOT have jurisdiction over Disney Transport because it's privatly owned and operated. They are doing a full report and offering suggestions for the Company to use. Disney is in no contract to follow what the NTSB provides. But my first thought to this is how the NTSB could look at Disney's proceedures and apply them else where. 1 accident in 38 years... they'd probably love to have a track record like that.


And those used to be happy songs, now you're gonna make me bawl everytime I go to Disney, especially watching Illuminations. It really was eerie watching the monorails go around. Maybe they'll start in production of mark 8's with a better front end so we can ride up front again. I know the mark 6's have a couple more decades of life left in them, but I don't want to wait that long to ride up front again.

That's what ties us all together. The loss is indeed felt all over, even with us in entertainment. We sat for a while and mourned the loss of someone so young, many of my fellow CM's being close to his age. Even some of your "Best Friends" feel the loss as well. Monorail Pink, a frequent sight above Epcot, was the favorite of Miss Daisy Duck, who always blew it and it's passengers kisses as it passed above her. The Highway In The Skies seemed just too empty and sad without it and her lost friend.

Hugs to all the 'friends of' too...I feel so much for you all...for every CM who has to be onstage, happy and smiling (how well I remember the sign in the back room reminding us we were entering the onstage area that we had at the Stores back in the day...) for the guests while they carry this heaviness in their hearts. I know I haven't stopped crying since this happened and I'm not a part of the family (though I once was and I have the Traditions pin and photos in the costume to prove it!)

I just want to say...I just got back from the doctors, and with glasses and a new contact lens, finally, three months post op I have enough vision in my one eye to say that I am going to make my first official 'project' now to crochet a blanket in Austin's honor and donate it to the U of M Mott Children's Hospital. I was going to make one for my surgeon first off, but this in my heart takes priority.

When it's done, I'll post pictures. I'm going to start tonight, might take a little while to finish it. I'm a little out of practice...

UMM, sorry to disagree, but the NTSB has jurisdiction over all forms of public transportation, including any at WDW. The ownership is not really an issue, as all planes trains, and busses etc. are owned "privatly" in the sense they are not owned by the government.

And they can exercise jurisdiction over any investigation that has resulted in one or more deaths. (that is just one of the threshold points that can trigger a NTSB investigation)

And they are not the bad guys, they simply have more experts and resources that other agencies concerning accident investigations.

So it is 'official' then that the front cab is closed off to guests for good?

That video really shows his personality...what a neat guy. You can tell how much he is enjoying joking around with the little boy and the family. It was just taken last Tuesday...it made me teary-eyed to see it and know what was to come, but you can clearly see how much he loved his job.

Thank you for sharing that. I couldn't help but get choked up a bit - it was clear Austin had a great enthusiasm that he very much shared with his guests.

I saw Guests in the front cab today. Got a little choked up when I saw it, in fact.

Everyone, St. March and I picked out two very pretty cards today- one for Austin's family and one for the whole 'Monorail family'.

I hope to mail the one for Austin's family early tomorrow morning, the one for the monorail family maybe a day later if I can't get the best address to send it to by then (I'm hoping not to just have to mail it to Guest Communications but I will if all else fails).

If anyone from here wants their username added to the cards and sees this, please PM me by say, 2AM EST tonight to be added to the card for his family. and 6pm EST tomorrow for the Monorail folks card and I'll fit in as many people as I can (Am about to clean out my PMs so there's room for incoming messages...)

When the cab is closed to guests for some reason, it's an extraordinarily monotonous ride. I think of all I would have missed out on if guests didn't ride in the cab.

I can't count how many kids I have had my picture taken with and how many autographs I have given out.

Some really memorable experiences.
