I really have a love hate relationship with my cell phone. I hate the voice part and love the text. I have only once taken a call in a show and that was my sign language professor notifying me I passed my evaluation and she was enrolling me in ASL 3 and conversational skills. I was elated but cut it real short and called her back later.
I can't really hear the ringtones so I keep mine on vibrate most of the time. And I normally clip it to my wheelchair cupholder. Makes the entire chair vibrate. If it isn't there it is in a holder clipped to my belt. I don't wear it while interpreting. Can't answer it then anyway so why wear it.
I think if more adults would learn to use there text in public places to communicate it would be better. Oh and don't use it during a show because the light can bother people.

I have often wondered why hands free phone conversations are any more dangerous or distracting then having a conversation with a person seated next to you in the car. Isn't it the same?

Check out the links I posted previously. Something about the areas of the brain that are used vs. those that are needed for safe driving.

I think the distraction level is the same, which is why I tell my kids to NOT talk to me while I'm driving!

I read of a report recently -- sorry, can't remember where -- that confirms this, but says that if the source of the voice you're talking to is placed in front of you, as if you are talking to them in the direction you're driving, then the brain confusion is lessened or eliminated. The distraction apparently comes from your brain wanting to locate the source of the conversation when it's not in front of you.

So, they can talk to me only if they are on the hood of my car!
