When I was growing up, I remember that we had some immigrant families that put a coffee/milk mixture in their babys bottle. The older kids, who were buddies with us, said that it was common.

The locals here in Hawaii give their kids hard candy to suck on when they go to bed. That combined with removal of fluoride in the water has created a dental nightmare for many kids.

Wow! I wonder why they do that!

Actually Hobie, my teeth are just fine! I've never had a cavity and I only wore braces for about a year and a half; they weren't as terrible as my neice's (she's 5 months younger than me) who was never sent to bed with a bottle. Go figure.

Oh and I have no wisdom teeth. I just came back from the dentist and they took an x-ray...there's nothing there. They'll never come in because well they've never formed! I'm also missing (as in never born with) the teeth that go between your front teeth and your canines. So I have my two front teeth and then my canines. But again, that bit of genetic code was "deleted" so they never formed.

Let's see...I've also never been stung by a bee, never had a casserole (Mom may be living here for about 50 years but she still cooks like a Cuban), never rode a bike, don't know how to swim, never flown a kite or have been to camp.

And some how I still managed to have a fun childhood ;)

Oh and Grumpy, the reason why many Latin families do that is the belief is that if you send baby to bed with only milk in the bottle, the milk will curdle in the babies intestines. Coffee will prevent said curdling. Obviously coffee has no magical anti-curdling properties nor will the milk curdle after being drunk.

You're also supposed to cover that indentation between your collar bones because that's how you get sick. And a red string placed on your head will cure a migrane. Oh and my favorite, walking barefoot on a cold floor will give you pneumonia.

Sounds a lot like my childhood! :)

That's like my teeth. Only I'm missing the right tooth, and the left is what's called a "peg tooth", which is basically only half a tooth. I haven't gotten them fixed yet, but most people don't even notice after awhile.

But I do have my wisdom teeth, and they all came in just fine. Didn't have to get them removed or anything.

That rock candy reminds me of my grandparents. When I spent the night with them, they would always let me go to sleep with a Ludens cherry cough drop in my mouth. Trying to bump me off via choking, maybe?

Of course, they also gave me beer and wine coolers (made by my grandma with Mogen David and 7-Up) from toddlerhood, as well as plying me with coffee that was loaded with cream and as many sugar lumps as I could force in. And I grew up into an uber-healthy adult, so maybe there was something to their methods (or maybe my family was just big believers in Darwinism and I managed to survive their acid test).
