Celebrating the Studio for Electronic Music



Today we’re feeling the beat as we celebrate the 66th anniversary of the Studio for Electronic Music. Known as the first modern music studio, the Studio for Electronic Music became a haven for innovative musicians and producers around the world. It was here that electronically synthesized sounds were mixed to create an entirely new genre of music that so many have come to love.

The Studio for Electronic Music was established at the West German Broadcasting facility in Cologne, Germany. The concept for a studio to create electronic music was birthed by composers Werner Meyer-Eppler, Robert Beyer, and Herbert Eimert, who for years had brainstormed the technical requirements of the challenge. Artists in the studio created breakthrough beats, editing and mixing sounds using new types of equipment and technical composition. Composers and producers came from far and wide as the studio became a breeding ground for musical innovation.

Until the year 2000, the original studio continued to push the boundaries of electronic music and develop new sounds and ideas. Today’s Doodle, by Berlin-based illustrator Henning Wagenbreth, celebrates the diversity of thought and imagination that built this studio and transformed the possibilities of music!

Otfried Preußler's 94th Birthday



Otfried Preussler knew all about magic.

Every day, he walked several kilometers to and from his job as a primary school teacher. While others might take this time to consider their schedules, or their grocery lists, or even their troubles, Otfried instead dreamed up stories.

The basis for many were the spoken folktales of his youth. Germany, he knew, was flush with the fantastic, especially when it came to magical beings. The stories are universal, and as a result, Otfried Preussler’s books have been translated into 55 languages and sold 50 million copies worldwide.

Otfried’s stories were quick to spread once they escaped his imagination and appeared in print. It wasn’t long before most German children (and their parents) were giggling over Kasperl and Seppel spoiling the Robber Hotzenplotz’s plans – or the adventures of the little witch, ghost, and water sprite.

Otfried knew that being “good” is sometimes hard to figure out, for human children and little witches alike. Adults sometimes get it wrong, too. He felt that what’s important is that you try to be kind and brave, and – if you’re a water sprite – don’t ever let your feet dry out.

The author would be 94 today – still far too young to attend the annual witches party, according to The Little Witch. In his honor, Frankfurt-based illustrator Jan Buchczik created a Doodle for all the bold little witches, ghosts, and water sprites of the world. But not you, Robber Hotzenplotz – you should take a page from the Little Witch’s book and try doing only good deeds from now on!

Nain Singh Rawat’s 187th birthday



For much of the 19th century, Europe played the Great Game. Explorers vied with each other to map the geographical vastness of Central Asia and understand its people and customs. Knowledge was essential to political success, but Europeans were not welcome everywhere.

A thirst for knowledge and the need for secrecy led to the creation of pandits, a select group of highly educated and brave local men trained in geographical exploration.

Prominent among these was Nain Singh Rawat, the first man to survey Tibet, determining the exact location and altitude of Lhasa, mapping the Tsangpo, and describing in mesmerizing detail fabled sites such as the gold mines of Thok Jalung.

Disguised as a Tibetan monk, he walked from his home region of Kumaon to places as far as Kathmandu, Lhasa, and Tawang. He maintained a precisely measured pace, covering one mile in 2000 steps, and measured those steps using a rosary. He hid a compass in his prayer wheel and mercury in cowrie shells and even disguised travel records as prayers.

Today’s Doodle by Hari & Deepti Panicker is a silhouette diorama illustration, portraying Nain Singh Rawat as he might have looked on his travels — solitary and courageous, looking back over the distances he had walked, rosary beads in hand, and staff by his side. Oh, the wonders he must have seen!

40th Anniversary of Film "Office Romance"



Romance is in the air! Today marks the 40th anniversary of Office Romance, the hit 1977 film that brilliantly blends romantic drama with screwball comedy.

Fifty-eight million people (nearly half the population in 1977) saw Office Romance upon its Soviet Era release. Praised for its depiction of everyday life in Soviet society, the film is still celebrated for its unconventional love story, talented acting, and wistful humor.

Office Romance made a lasting impact on Russian culture with its memorable one-liners and catchy soundtrack, inspiring homage through remakes and stage performances. Today’s Doodle pays homage as well, depicting Kalugina catching Novoseltsev in the middle of an embarrassing conversation, one of the film’s iconic scenes.

Halloween 2017





HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
If it isn’t the witches, werewolves, or goblins that haunt us every Halloween, it’s the ghastly task of deciding what to wear! Do the spooky creatures of the night face a similar ordeal? Today’s Doodle checks in on Jinx, the lonely ghost, who embarks on a mission to find the perfect costume — and a place to belong.

Last year, Momo successfully defended Magic Cat Academy from the clutches of a mischievous ghost invasion. This year, Jinx desperately wants to join Momo and the other trick-or-treaters outside. Not wanting to scare anyone, the lonely ghost agonizes over a costume to blend in with the trick-or-treaters, wreaking havoc in the process. In the end, Jinx finds wearing a disguise is no match for being yourself.

BEHIND THE SCENES
In keeping with Halloween Doodle Tradition, the team felt it was time to follow the tales of Momo and the Candy Cup Witches with the Ghost’s side of the story.

In the initial concept, Momo dressed up as a ghost for Halloween and fell under the spell of a real ghost. Alas, this spectral romance was better suited for Valentine’s Day. Once the team decided on the ‘lonely ghost’ concept, the importance of being yourself emerged as a suitable theme. Thus, Jinx was born.

Hannah Höch’s 128th Birthday



If a picture is worth a thousand words, Hannah Höch’s pioneering photomontages speak volumes about gender stereotypes and politics, especially during the Weimar Republic era.

Born on this day in 1889, in Gotha, Thuringia, Germany, Höch was the only female member of the Berlin Dada movement, an avant-garde band of artists that rejected the conventional German Expressionist aesthetic of the moment. As a student, Höch studied applied arts, including glass design, painting, and graphic design. Her romantic involvement with Austrian artist Raoul Hausmann introduced her to the inner circle of Dada artists, inspiring her later photomontage (or fotomontage) collage work.

Höch showed her most famous photomontage, Cut with the Dada Kitchen Knife through the Last Weimar Beer-Belly Cultural Epoch in Germany, at the First International Dada Fair in 1920. Juxtaposing fragmented images culled from newspapers and magazines, including bits and pieces of movie star Pola Negri, philosopher Karl Marx, and a map of European countries where women could vote, this large-scale piece conveyed her stance on women’s roles in society, art-world misogyny, and current affairs. Later works further revealed Höch’s incisive perspective as a 1920s New Woman who lived by her own rules.

Created by Berlin-based collage artist Patrick Bremer, today’s Doodle uses photomontage imagery and the feeling of brushstrokes to capture Höch’s likeness as one of her own collage characters. “Höch and many other Dadaists have long been an influence in my work, as I expect she is to most artists working in collage,” says Bremer. “Taking on this project meant delving back into her work and visiting it in person at the Berlinische Gallery, and it has been fascinating to surround myself with her unique dada vision of the world.”

Abdul Qavi Desnavi’s 87th Birthday



On this day in the year 1930, Urdu author and literary critic Abdul Qavi Desnavi was born in the village of Desna in Bihar. In the course of a literary career that spanned five decades, he authored a vast body of Urdu works covering fiction, biographies, poetry, and anthologies. His most famous works include ‘Sat Tahriren,’ ‘Motala-E-Khotoot Ghalib,’ ‘Talash-E-Azad,’ and his magnum opus, the biographical ‘Hayat-e-Abul Kalam Azad,’ celebrating the life of freedom fighter Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

As the head of the Urdu Department at Bhopal’s Saifia College and a member of several regional and national literary bodies, he exerted a powerful influence on the evolution of Urdu literature and academic thought in India. At a personal level, he mentored some of India’s finest Urdu poets and writers such as Javed Akhtar and Iqbal Masood.

Day of the Dead 2017



For centuries, the indigenous peoples of Mexico have honored death, viewing it as a part of the cycle of nature, rather than fearing it. Today’s Doodle celebrates El Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead). On this day, everyday creatures represent those who have passed. Dogs are considered spirit guides, bringing souls to their final resting place, while migrating monarch butterflies are thought to be ancestral spirits come to visit their loved ones.

Present-day celebrations combine two days ⸺ All Saints' Day on November 1 is devoted to los angelitos (“little children”), and All Souls' Day on November 2 is dedicated to adults.

Candlelit altars of ofrendas (offerings) are laid out in cemeteries to honor loved ones. Sugar skulls, copal incense, vivid marigold flowers, photographs, and sweet pan de muerto are placed to help the dead find their way into the world of the living. This holiday serves as a tremendous source of comfort and community to its observers.
