My step son was born with a laundry list of problems including spina bifida. My wife was told she could either leave him at the hospital or take him home to die. Door #3 was a life flight to Stanford. He's now 20 and a productive member of society.

Another problem SB kids face is tethered spine. Basically, the spinal column bonds to the hip bones and as the kid grows the spine stretches and eventually breaks the nerves. A number of people within the SB community say let it happen and the kid can use a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Morons! That got fixed too. He does need braces and crutches for any distance but he does get around. We use a chair at DL as he gets pretty pooped but the CMs move him up to the front. They don't ask to see any paperwork either.

Hobie, thanks for letting us know about your step-son, I admire all the strength you have to go thru this with your Family- Autism is one thing, but up to now, it mostly has seemed to bother OTHER people more than myself or my son(The real challenge of going through life with a limited adult are just starting to descend on us)Where your son has had a PHYSICAL fight which seems a lot more painful in a lot of ways-I also admire your resolve to keep him out of a wheelchair-so many bad complications can occur when someone is wheelchair-bound. I hope I am saying all this in a good way, and you should be proud of all that he has accomplished, and proud of you and your wife.

Thanks DMom. I married into the situation with a pretty good idea of what was needed. It has been overwhelming at times but we've worked through the issues/problems/medical emergencies.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger when you're dealing with school bozos or medical dunces when you trying to get services for your son. They all play the same stalling game whether it's a physical or emotional issue with the kids. Hawaii was so bad a suit was brought in federal court against the state school system. They were monitored by a federal judge for almost ten years.

Federal, state and local social services will lie about what they will offer until it comes to stepping up to the plate. Then it's we've reevaluated the child and he no longer qualifies. It takes the threat or action of getting a rat terrier lawyer or going public to get them off their dead asses.

My son (I feel I can call him that as his weasel father has done nothing for him in twenty years) has done well. He will always be physically and mentally challenged but he's a good kid with a big heart who works hard. He got a job at Safeway where many of our friends stop by to give him a bad time. He loves it.

Enough of my rant. The sun has finally broken through so I'm gonna go outside and see if I can warm up my toes.

DisneyMom wrote:As a Nurse, I agree! But how are we going to accomplish it? I know that even in countries that provide the care for all, I hear there are problems with getting some of the care(waiting months/years for operations, for example).A perfect system would succeed by preventative measures(people would have less health issues by doing ALL the right things, and therefore would not "take advantage' of the system, etc.)but unfortunately, people are so flawed, the powers that be are so flawed, our environmental factors are so flawed...
I am not meaning to get into any sort of debate(not smart enough for the answers)I just am overwhelmed at the Health Care Mess! :(
Hey, I don't want to drag you into a debate you don't want to be in, but the countries that are doing it right really don't have these problems our government wants us to believe they have. There might be isolated incidents of things like waiting for surgeries, but certainly nothing large scale. Yes, you will see malingering in any socialized health care system (or any health care system for that matter, like you imply people basically suck!), but the good ones are built to tolerate that. Talk to people from France or Canada (my roommates and I have done some work with Canadian military and they brought a bunch of civilians with them...we chatted) the situation is good and they like their health care. They do end up having less long term problems because more people do take care of the preventative stuff like they should. Further, having to pay for people's care leads the government to make better decisions for the health of all citizens like strongly discouraging smoking and treating alcohol and drug addictions as quickly and often as possible. Basically, at the end of the day, all these things add up to make it so there's not much of a system to take advantage of (or, really, no harm in taking advantage of it). If there's the slightest indication you're sick, you go see a doctor and, if there's anything to find, they'll do their utmost to find it because it's better for their entire civilization that they find it early!

I hope that's not too debatish for you. I'm not trying to argue with anybody, I just want to spread the knowledge I've had the joy of gaining through my travels abroad and my work with foreigners here in the States. I love our country enough that I signed up to defend it, and I'd love to see it get even better! :)

Edited to add: I make no secret of that I'm registered as a Democrat. The thing is, I also make no secret of that the Dems we have now are pussies (they have a good idea once in a while, but they'll hapilly compromise it to avoid getting called a mean name by the other side). The problem is, the Republicans are assholes. We need a major overhaul of the system and the pussies are too weak to get it done and the assholes are too mean to do anything that's not completely to the detriment of people everywhere. I'd be an independant, but I like voting in primaries (makes me feel like I have some control over my own fate) and they will never have a valid chance in an election run under the electoral college system. At the end of the day, it's not that there aren't people with good ideas out there, its that, by the time they rise to the level where they can do something great, they squander it by turning into a pussy or an asshole who, either way, is completely beholden to the money men who got them there. :( (Really, I'm only a liberal in this country...every other civilized country wonders why you should care who someone chooses to marry and thinks health care is a basic human right...I could go on, but everyone's stopped reading by now anyway...)

Kwahati, I will always welcome/appreciate information on Health Care, like I said, I am not informed enough to debate about this subject, just relating what some people from other countries have told me, probably pretty subjective stuff. I will again echo what was said about the powers that be being too screwed up, I have lost faith in so many things! I just didn't want to instigate any arguments on our happy forum, I like how we all seem to be having a good time. :)

It's easy. Just "immunize" yourself. Get Ralph one of those foam rubber red noses and have him wear it to bet for a month. Then maybe another month starting with a little white makeup around the eyes, and expand each day until you end the month with full white face. After that when you see a white face and a red nose you will feel the emotions you feel for your wonderful hubby instead of the negative feelings from your past.

The only down side to this would be if you go too far. You know it worked too good if you have to leave the MK in the middle of SpectroMagic to drag your hubby back to the room. :D:

And who knows, maybe the process will inspire your hubby to "clown around" a bit, just for you. :D:

Randy

Well, to be honest I don't know anything about health care specifically (I've spoken to some people too, just like you...yes, it probably is highly subjective). And my mother's a nurse (formerly NICU and pediatrics, now a school nurse at a school for the deaf & blind in Jacksonville), so I pretty much call her any time I have health related questions... That's what moms are for, right? :D: Beyond that, I've got some ideals I adhere to strongly and some ideas I think are good. I know, though, that both Communism and Reganomics *sounded* good in the idea stage...but we all know how they both turned out, so who really knows if my ideas are any good? I agree that the powers that be are screwed up, but I hope and pray that something good will happen for this country sometime soon. I see so many people working so hard on a daily basis, many of them in the face of a complete lack of faith from the public in their ability to get anything done simply because they're associated with the government (my roommates and friends in the intel field, the people I support at the Corps of Engineers and the Army...) and they are trying so hard to make things better, but each person can only do so much (and about half of the population in any place or any job are essentially SG's) and it's been a long time since this country has found the motivation and drive to work together...

Regardless of all that, according to the rules of the forums, arguments are fine so long as they don't devolve into attacks on others. I think quite highly of you (as, I'm sure, most of the regulars around here do) and I hope you and they feel similarly about me. If anybody wants to share anything, their opinion will be valued by me, if not necessarily agreed with. ;) I hope, further, that discussing this further didn't offend you in any way...like I said, it's just something I feel strongly about and it's at the forefront of my mind as I struggle to pay for medical services I was specifically told I would not be charged for. I won't lie that I envy Susi's lot in life that she has the luxury of choice (although I don't envy her pain). Beyond that, I'm aware that there are people in the world, and probably even here, who would envy my lot in life, that I'm lucky enough to have a job with benefits, even if they aren't the greatest...I know I get better medical care than my roommates now that I'm out of the military...at the same time, theirs is free...

It's a harsh world out there and I value all the people here at SGT who allow all comers to join the group around the fire as we tell our story...

Thanks, Kwahati, again your thoughts and info are appreciated, and I very much like to hear info from everyone on anything. I find this forum a great place for exactly that(kind of a great party without the finding something to wear and the clean-up) and I think you and all of our Posters are Smart, Funny and Cool....
