I've lost one grey to bone cancer, one to some kind of huge tumor in her abdomen, and another to severe arthritis that eventually crippled her to where she couldn't get up and move around without help. They were all elderly dogs so it wasn't breed specific, more age related.
We lost our German Shepherd to cancer, very sad way for her to go. but she did have a long life, almost 13. She had surgery to remove it, but hadn't fully recovered, when we found out it had spread. Vets were really good, but told us they couldn't get it as it had gone too far before we discovered it.

Part of the diet, that the rescuers told my inlaws was good for their greyhound was to add a plain yogurt to her food. I'm not sure what it does, but it helps her with gas or something?

Maybe it helps with digestion, like with people? I know one of mine had problems till we found out about his intolerance for certain proteans, and before that, the vet did have us mixing a little yogurt with his food. of course he scarffed it down as usuall!

I wish I'd know that years ago. Mac could clear a room with one "loss of pressure."

HEY....Donnie can do that too! We were alll on the kitchen floor playing with Meghyns Spin Art thing (think I am going to allow paint on the carpet? ;) )
Donnie lets one loose....OH GOD THE SMELL. Luckily I was sitting next to the cabinet that holds my air freshener and grabbed that. I even sprayed his backside since he was laying on his stomach. LOL I still had it out and I just knew he was going to do it again (the lifting of one leg was a big clue--why do some ppl do that?) so I started spraying before he even started making pooting noises. At least it didnt smell quite so bad, but the smell of that and cinnamon apple together was extremely interesting to say the least.

Mac would usually do SBDs. The one time he was explosive he scared himself. :D:

Whazzup wrote:I hope this won't gross you guys out, but here are 2 pictures of Sisi (newest greyhound) right after surgery to sew her side together. The dogs were running in the 1-acre yard and Sisi hit the corner of our 16-foot flatbed trailer and it ripped her side open, down into the muscle. Naturally this happened at night and I had to take her to the emergency vet for surgery. I won't post the picture of the wound before it was sewn up and a drain put in. She has recovered very nicely from the surgery and has a long scar and just a tiny bit of new shiny skin where the hair hasn't grown back yet. What's weird is that Shayla, the other grey, also split the skin in her flank when she caught it on the fence or something. We weren't home when that happened. She had to be sewn up, too. The vets mentioned that greys have thin skin and they run so fast that if they do hit something, the skin is bound to tear.

If you don't want to see these 2 graphic pictures, don't scroll down. I don't know how to make them smaller.

Tomorrow I'll take and post a current picture so you can see how well she has healed up.
That was a pretty nasty wound. Glad it healed up well. They do have thin skin and it tears very easily. Poor pup. That had to hurt.... :( Those large wounds can get infected so easily. Looks like you take very good care of her!

More than I can say for some of the monsters I have come across in my turns at several different vet hospitals. There was a cat that came in one time with a wound on her neck and the bandage on it. The bandage had not been taken off and changed in a month! You can only imagine the smell that came out of there. The people that brought her in were not regular clients of this vet, they only brought her to us to euthanize, because they did not want to go back to their vet and be embarassed that they had not taken care of the wound. That was one of the saddest things I have ever been part of. :( It stays with me to this day. There was absolutely NO reason that cat had to die like that. The poor thing's last moments on this planet were very torturous and painful. We had a helluva time getting the needle into that cat, because she was so scared and peed all over the table, then we had to bag her, (put her in a cloth bag with a zipper that you can pull one leg out of and find the vein and give the shot.) That poor creature went to kitty heaven having had a horrendous last month of life and a horribly scary death. :( I will NEVER forget that and when any animal has a wound that needs to be treated and it is not, that is what happens.

I will never hesitate to take my cats to the vet for the slightest bleeding wound. I know how they lick their wounds and their mouths are full of a bacteria called Pasteurella Multocida which can infect any wound, especially one that YOU get by them biting you or by simply having their saliva come into contact with an open wound you may have!. You can lose your arm from a cat bite!! They can infect their own wounds by licking them and it is not pretty. :(

I am so happy that your doggie has good parents and that more good parents are adopting good animals. :) They all need to be brought together and keep them out of the hands of the irresponsible.

Sometimes I think we're outnumbered, susi. We have an equine rescue group in our area, and you wouldn't believe some of the horror stories that come from the people in that group. I was going to relate some, but it's too depressing, and frustrating, and MADDENING to think about it.

I had a cat attack me once, all four feet and full set of teeth attached themselves to my leg. The cat had to be knocked off me with a vacuum cleaner hose (nearest weapon). Ended up with the dreaded cat scratch fever and infection in a lymph node in my groin which had to be lanced without anesthetic (that was fun :eek :) . I was lucky that a round of antibiotics cleared it up. Could have been a lot worse.
