I've got a few pins myself, but all the pins that I have were from the attractions that I work at. I think I bought a total of 5 or 6 pins, and I've gotten about 10 for free. I never wear the pins that I have, take them to the parks, or anything else. I could never understand how some people could take the pin trading so seriously. I had my cousin's children in town once and they traded, but they are all under 10. They only have about 5 pins each, and they probably traded with about 50 people. They didn't keep any pins longer than the next CM. It was quite amusing watching them.

I'm totally with Stduck on this one. The reason I buy the pins in the first place is because I like them. They mean something personal to me. So label me as a collector, not a trader. I don't have random pins just for the sake of saying I have pins that I would like to trade, I buy the pin because it represents a historical point in my life, or it completes a set that I'm collecting. The trading fanatics with the vests and briefcases full of pins are the type of people I don't think I could ever be social with. They are all shades of creepy-weird.

I know one collector, but he's about as mild-mannered about it as you can get.
As for me, I do have about 20 pins, and most I'm not really attached to -- but I got them all on clearance from a Disney store (some for less than a buck) just to try my hand at trading on my next WDW trip. I hope to trade them for some I like better, but I don't have the $$$ or desire to really get into collecting. I just want some nice souvenirs I can wear occasionally.

RE: vests. I once asked a pin trading guest, of about 28 or so, how many house payments his vest represented. His MOM, who was with him (and who probably drove him there, made his breakfast and buys him his undies) said, "We don't discuss that subject!"Sweetums wrote:I'm totally with Stduck on this one. OUCH!
I never said anything like that again. I always had fun with my "I have an Idea" pin, which was only given to cast members back in the days of the IHAI program. Nothing would burn a hard-core pin trader like a truly unique CM only pin that they don't have and I won't trade away!

Ah, Annual Passholes...Passholders I mean. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of cool APs, but some take the "You'll think you own the place" line a little too far....actually that's not even the word.
I think the worst experience I've had with them is while I was at Fantasmic, I was at Marque and a woman stormed up to me and demanded to know where the Anuual Passholders entrance was. I told her we don't have a special entrance anywhere on property for them at any attraction/show. And she got all pissed. Naturally there are plenty of things to do down at the entrance (Moving strollers, answering question....pressing the headset against your ear to make it look like your listening to an important tone out...not that I did that
)
Actually I take that back, the worst AP situation I had was when I did parade and I had my lanyard on, this AP comes up and just yanks, I mean yanks the lanyard to him so he could look, oh first off, don't ever, and I mean EVER do that, expecially to me, because in the back of my mind, me being jerked around without my knowing about it, means someone is about to get decked, its an automatic reaction I have. Just when I was getting ready to wail away on whoever it was, I stopped, yanked my lanyard back, stuffed it in my shirt and said "Good day sir" then walked off.

I have collected Disney pins before they became a heavily marketed fad. I remember during the late 80s and early 90s, one had to really hunt to find pins. It made finds all the more special.
Now you can't go 20 feet without running into a pin cart. They are sold everywhere. I still collect pins but I do not trade or try to spend more than $8 on a single pin. Pin collecting has become way too chaotic and competitve. I find many pin collectors nice, but I do not understand those who feel that pin collecting is a competition.
Don't get me wrong. I like all the pins that are available (anything Sorcerer Mickey, King Arthur's Carrousel, and event-specific pins). It's just not all that fun anymore.

I don't quite understand the whole pin trading obsession that some folks have. The last time I was at WDW, I was standing next to a pin cart when I heard this loud *THUMP* next to the cart. I glanced over to see what was going on and saw this middle-aged woman open up this huge 4" three-ring binder chocked full of pages of pins. I mean it was full. She must have had $10,000 woth of pins in that thing. Unbelievable.
But I guess everyone has to have a hobby. :)

I'll stick with Painting as my hobby thank you very much. I think I mentioned this on another thread. But Dennis one of the Mansion/Parade leads took all the CC lanyards and compiled one of pins he knew NO ONE would want and wears that one on the Parade route.
I was also in WoD one day talking to one of the CMs about pin trading and they all scramble to try and get a teal lanyard because only kids 12 and younger can trade with one of those.

heh.. I try not to get the lanyards if I can help it. My excuse (and a valid one if you ask me) is that I"m new and I want to be able to focus on optimum guest service. I don't want to be messing with pins when I need to be assistiing focused on so many folks queuing up at the register or filing through the door. I know I can't avoid the trading forever, but it sure helps now when I'm still learning everything.Stduck wrote:I was also in WoD one day talking to one of the CMs about pin trading and they all scramble to try and get a teal lanyard because only kids 12 and younger can trade with one of those.
As for me personally I only collect, I don't trade anymore.. I started at WDW October 99 but DLR kind of ruined my enthusiasm for it.. Also I found it's just too expensive to keep buying one to keep; one to trade or whatever. I only get the pins that really make me go "WOW" or that have that one or 2 characters on it I really like.. I've saved a lot of money by narrowing it all down like that. =P

Re: Persistant Pin Traders
SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST PLAIN SELFISH!!!!! :bikehit:shorty1219 wrote:I work in Tomorrowland stores where we get to deal with a lot of the persistant pin traders. Last night my manager told us a story about a couple of these pin traders...
My manager was in a meeting on the other side of the park somewhere. This was on the first Sunday of the month (which is a Gift with Purchase Sunday in the Premiere shop). So there were a lot of people in the Premiere shop wanting to buy buy buy so they can earn free pins. Three friends were in the store together looking at stuff. They got seperated in the store and somewhere in all of the chaos of the store, one of the three passes out. The other friends didn't notice that he had passed out, and they kept on their merry way buying pins and such. So the CM's in the store call 911 and for Alpha 1 (do they still call emergency services that?). The manager was notified via radio and she started to quickly walk across the park. She said that around Jungle Cruise, she got stopped by pin traders who wanted to look at her lanyard. She politely told them that on any other day, she would be happy to stop and trade, but she had an emergency in one of her stores. The guest was adament about her stopping and trading. When the guest realized that my manager wasn't going to be able to trade with them the guest stated that "The only emergency that you (my manager) are going to have is me (the guest)!" And I guess that the guest stormed off. My manager continued to walk to Premiere.
Just another reason why I hate pins and their owners.
