You're referring to the Puerto Rican Coqui frog.

<dead link removed>

They're very small and when the croak it sounds like, "Cookeeee." Multiply that by thousands going at the same time and it's mind liquifying. A neighbor was the general manager of the Ritz in Kapalua. Their entire multi acre central court yard was infested with them. He put a strike team of employees together and they would be out every night looking under leaves and pealing back plants looking for them. It took a year but they finally cleared them out.

Most of the islands have pretty much cleared them out. The Big Island, however, has thrown in the towel. They first appeared there on plants imported from Puerto Rico. No one realized how fast they would spread until it was too late.

Everyone loves the tourists. Even the ones that drive at 35 in a 55 zone on the highway because there's a huge ocean next to the highway and they've never seen one before so they have to take in every drop before they get to their hotel which is on the same ocean that will be there every day while they they are out on the sand next to the same ocean completely destroying their epidermis but that's not as bad as when the whales appear which means that the tourists will either only do 10 mph or stop completely in the middle of the road to take pictures. Was that a run on sentence?

We had those signs for a while. The tourists knocked them all down jockeying for position to get the best parking spot ever so they could get the whale picture of a lifetime on their itty bitty point and shoot cameras.

This is a whale picture tourists.

I agree. You didn't really see a whale unless you were close enough to smell when it exhales. That's whale watching.

Remember the TV show, Rescue 911?

Here is one of their stories, for your consideration:

Part I

Part II

I shudder as I watch this.

I also find myself wondering, how did we live before cell phones?

I thought my wife's reaction was bad... This, of course, is quite a bit worse.

I would have knocked it down so I could take it home with me. I'm not sure how I would have gotten it on the plane, but it would be worth a try. That would look great in my garage next to my stop sign and road work ahead sign. (Said with all the sarcasm I can muster)

This is a big joke with all of us at work. Seems people think they need to have road signs at their house as souvenirs. We have all of these signs at work and I can not for the life of me figure out why they are decorations. I guess if you really want one, I can go out back and dig through the pile of junk and find you a "flagger ahead" sign that you can cherish forever.
