Stupid Guest Tricks

I've seen pictures of Lon Chaney without makeup, etc., and he looked like an ordinary guy. Mel Blanc, Man of a Thousand Voices, had a very ordinary "normal" voice. It seems that if you want to be successful as a face or voice actor, able to play virtually any role, your face/voice must be very plain. Johnny Depp has a very wide range; looking at pictures of him as Capt. Jack Sparrow, the Mad Hatter and Sweeney Todd, it's hard to see him in the roles; and now as Barnabas Collins, he almost looks like Michael Jackson. But as himself? Not so much.
