I was astonished the first time I ran across the factoid that the first Transatlantic cable (telegraph, of course) was laid in 1858. :dropmouth

It only worked for about a month. :rolleyes: But there were functional ones by the 1860s. Somewhere I've seen footage of them laying one; fascinating.

The US has military bases on Guam; that may explain some of the cables.
