I had an experience like that in Hawaii, on the big island. I was climbing on some rocks when my frayed meniscus flared up... for the first time. It had been a little sore until then, but climbing up a short (10') rock face had caused enough swelling that I couldn't even walk once I was up there. It was bad enough that I tripped over something and it was easier to just let myself fall on the rocks than to try to catch myself with that leg.

Thankfully, I had my dad and Little Wallaby with me, and they helped me get the picture I had climbed up there for in the first place, and then helped me find a way back down. But had I been alone, I don't know how long I might have waited for someone to show up. Another one of those areas where there is little to no cell phone service.
