Stupid Guest Tricks

A few years ago I was in Jiko having dinner with a friend and we were having an interesting conversation with the four people at the table next to us. Around the time we were getting ready to ask for the bill, they mentioned they were on the Platinum Plan or something similar, were leaving the next day, and had some leftover dining credits, so they picked up our meal.

Really embarrassed the person I was with, and he complained (privately) afterwards that normally he tended to pick up other people's checks and could not stand it when somebody did it for him.

His family is going to meet us at WDW this May. I am confident he will use his GPS to go everywhere. They are staying at AK Lodge. Bet he uses it to go to AK.

I admit I use my GPS on a daily basis going to and from work (though mostly just to work) even though I've been driving the same route for 10 years... My GPS displays traffic data on it, and it'll alert me if there's an incident on my route.

I have it set to a "silent" voice though, so the only sounds it makes are the traffic alerts.

I also like to just keep an eye on whether I'm running on-schedule or not.

Had a lady come in, a coach for one of the teams in the area for all this lacrosse, baseball and softball stuff going on right now, telling me she needed to take the DME. I asked her what time her flight was and she said 11. I told her they recommend taking the bus three hours prior to her flight so at 8 AM. "But, it's already 8:15!!" "Then you're really going to want to catch the 8:30!" XD

I don't get it, don't they explain all this when they set up the DME?

I can't remember if we bothered with the GPS when we were at WDW, but I do know that Mapquest and Google Maps have the parks correctly labeled, but when you try to get directions to them they get really odd. Mapquest plonked the pin for the Magic Kingdom down by Epcot. Which was clearly labeled as Epcot on the map -- apparently they know where it is but don't want to let you know how to get there. My theory is that Disney wants everyone to stay on-site and use the on-site transportation, so they pay all the mapmakers to hide the parks. ;)

But that doesn't explain all the excellent signage around Disney property making it nearly impossible to get lost. The problem with GPS and map programs is that they all rely on the actual street addresses of places. With how everything is laid out the street addresses used by those things rarely match up properly with what's actually there.

There's no real reason to need to use GPS, Mapquest, Google Maps, etc. to get around Disney property anyway. There are signs telling you how to get most everywhere from most everywhere and if you miss a turn the next sign will most likely include directions to your destination anyway. It'll be a different route but it'll get you there.

This isn't just a Disney problem either, one time I was using my GPS to get over to Universal Orlando and it sent me to a service entrance to the resort.

Some of those signs are tricky though. On our last trip, my husband was driving. He knew where we were going, in the sense that he knew for example we were heading to Downtown Disney. The first few signs said that, but suddenly changed to saying West Side or Pleasure Island. I was distracted with the boys for a second and didn't notice, and he didn't know the difference so he missed the turn. Other times, on the way back, we had to just know that following the signs for either Magic Kingdom or Fort Wilderness would get us to Wilderness Lodge, since it would change from sign to sign.
