From everything I've read in the sailing magazines medical care in Mexico is excellent and cheap. That doesn't mean an opportunist won't take advantage of a bad situation to get his palm greased.

Well, that's why I said so-called doctor. I can't imagine anyone with a medical degree being so awful, so maybe it was someone impersonating one.
Hearing a lot of bad stories from there lately, with Americans as well as Mexican Citizens being victims of organized crime. Hope you and your sailing buddies never experience anything like that-anywhere. Have heard of modern-day pirates.....

Pirates is a whole other deal. The ones with the best press are the Somalians but there are other areas in the world that have problems too.
A few years ago my brother and three friends were going to do a delivery of a sail boat from New Guinea to Tahiti. My mom was freaking out and ask if they were concerned about pirates. My brother replied, "Nope. We've got three M-16s and a grenade launcher on board."
