Another Bus Accident

I apologize to all for sounding uncaring... i see the world threw the eyes of a first responder.. yes i truely feel for the family, the friend that was with the victim, and also the driver... some times i have to remember to take the medic/firefighter glasses off and see the world from the view of a human being...

I can see where it might not be Disney's fault because little kids on bikes can be careless. Thankfully nothing horrible happens 99 percent of the time, other than a skinned knee or broken bone at worse. But then you have a horrible tragedy like this...prayers to everyone involved.

My heart breaks for the driver, their family, for everyone.

LATimes is saying the kids had no adult supervision. As a parent that is unimaginable to me. 9 and 11 alone on rented WDW bikes like that- what a tragic mistake. I'm just sick over this it's a tragedy for all involved.

God, Transportation has had such a bad year.

Not blaming fault,but we have the same situation here in town. The county laid down a bike/jogging/walking path next to a busy country road. Granted it's not in the 'best' shape any more,but it's 5' wide and 10' off the road. Guess where the bike riders cruise? A guy was killed out there last year when a car came around a corner from over a hill. :(

I don't understand why sidewalks are not used anymore, they seem to be a thing of the past. I can not even begin to count the # of people I saw in the road today and not utilizing sidewalks (espcially moms pushing strollers!)

This is so sad! I can't imagine losing a child like that at WDW. :(

According to the Sentinel the kid was riding on the sidewalk when he crossed into the road for some reason. He struck the side of the bus and got pulled underneath.

For the most part unless there is a designated bike path bikes belong on the road. Sidewalks are for pedestrians and bikes are vehicles. In some places it is illegal for bikes to be on the sidewalk. In my mind it is the responsibility of bikers to ensure they stay along the edge of the road and out of the main traffic lanes and it is the responsibility of drivers to watch out for bikers.

Thats the law here in Toronto. However, If the wheel size is smaller than 14" kids may ride on the sidewalk. I dread when my daughter moves up to a bigger bike. This exception is abused by teenagers with those stunt bikes with the tiny wheels, and by commuters with fold able bikes. Nothing like having a 16 year old go whizzing by at 20 miles an hour down a crowded sidewalk, sending people diving out of the way.
