Not all of them, some are sideways, some face forward.

...Unless the train is backing up.

They do *now*. Originally one train went clock-wise, the other counter-clock-wise. Made for a rather interesting operation, and explains why there's room for two tracks at Main Street and Frontierland.

Interesting. Explains why Robert Olszewski's model of Main Street Station at Disneyland and also the Magic Kingdom have two tracks.

The DLRR had two tracks at the stations to allow for the trains to pass, but they both traveled in the same direction, both clock-wise. Originally the freight cars would only stop at Frontierland Station and the Passenger Coaches would only stop at Main Street Station.

His Disneyland Station is correct; his Magic Kingdom Station is wrong, as there was never enough width there for a second track.

I could have sworn that trains were run in opposite directions at first, but a review of pre-opening photos shows that I was mistaken.

There have thus been only three traffic patterns on the Disneyland Railroad:

1. Trains all run clockwise, passenger stops at Main Street, freight stops at Frontierland, using passing sidings. Done for only a short time, gone by the end of 1957 at the latest.

2. Trains all run clockwise, and all trains make all stops. Passing sidings no longer used. This is what's been normal for most of the line's history.

3. "Reverse Route" used during Splash Mountain construction.

WDW Railroad has only used #2 and 3 as there were never passing sidings there.

Do you mean that the trains were used for transporting freight like merchandise within the parks ?

Nope. Disneyland used to have a a set of freight cars that guests could ride on. Some more info can be found at Yesterland.
