:D: heh heh heh :D:
or should it be ... mwahahaha
They are having "issues" with the big Barco sign out in front of the convention center. It's the large digital sign that is used to advertise all of the upcoming events in our facilities. One of the other former techs drove by the other day and told me that it was screwed up bad! It had a red stripe down one side and all of the graphics were squished into the upper 12 inches of the LED tiles. This is on a sign that is that is at least 10 feet tall and 16 feet wide.
It's going to be interesting to watch and see if the IT guys can figure it out. And this one is just a software issue, we were having power supplies and cooling fans failing on the tiles over the last 12 months. Not sure if they will know what to do when that happens.
On the job front, I went for a kind of a county job a couple of days ago. It wouldn't have paid well but it would have been interesting. But then the defendant decided to take a plea after hearing that there was a jury waiting. So that was the end of that. ;)
Hope all is well with the other job seekers out there.

It's a large Barco LED sign. It operates like a large computer monitor but it has been wired up to receive images from a Cisco digital media player. About 3 days after Tech Services was laid off, the IT guys moved the computers that run all of the signage and now they've screwed up the signal going out to the sign.
Isn't technology wonderful?

I think it's hilarious when employers think they can downsize and save money, but then quality, among other things, suffers big time. Think they'll rehire Tech Services to get the sign going again?

Out of the 3 of us that knew the sign the best, 2 have been "redeployed" and now belong to other city departments and then there is me, the unemployed one. I may be putting my name on the IATSE overhire list (since I'm not a member) and that would mean, they could hire me back through the union to work on the systems. At least this way, I would have the union to act as a buffer from some of the management ploys, just like I had the city before. The current management tends to burn people out by overworking them on salary and being hourly and city employees prevented them from doing too much along those lines with us before.

Same thing happened with me over the past few weeks. Politics suck, but I will be better off somewhere else (WDWCP Spring 2010 here I come).
techie-13 wrote:And my boss's assistant tells me that he is at one of our theatres because the backstage paging system died on Sunday. :D: One of the larger children's theatre groups in the Bay Area is in the middle of a production. The system is on the fritz and now, there is no longer a Technical Services Department to troubleshoot and fix the problem. :D:
I'm just waiting for the large LED sign out front of the building to have problems too. :D:
I can relate to this too. When they build a new facility in my area with an auditorium, I was to head the opening of the tech side of it (which I was) and everything went great. As soon as my old boss left, they got rid of me, and I've heard that they're having problems right and left and can't seem to figure it out. They wanted me to train them (on my own time) how everything works and troubleshoot things for them (without pay, they didn't think that labor laws applied to them), and needless to say, I said "HAVE A NICE DAY!"
This was hard because it's not it only inconvenienced people full of politically correct corporate BS, but it was a school, and it just hurt and continues to hurt the kids & community, which eats away at me. :(
But, some things are just beyond my control. What can I do? :(
So with the CP, I hope to make as magic as I can for the kids ALL DAY, which I could not have possibly have at my old job, which I would have loved to do.

Check out this thread of mine:

The same thing could apply here. This could be a blessing in disguise, and there are only more opportunities.
Hope this helps.
Good luck on your future endeavors!

Years ago Merill Lynch laid off all their network people and outsourced the whole deal to IBM. IBM sent in a bunch of PC repair guys who had no network chops.
It took about three months for the network to melt down. They tried to rehire the network guys but they all had gotten better paying jobs at the competition.
As my company's had sold them the backbone switches we got an cost plus 10% deal to bring the net back to life. The FE's had a great time for two months in NY, NY on Merrill's dime.
