Don't get hung up on one Linux distro, I would look into Solaris (a lot of corporate use), and FreeBSD as well. I'm currently working through a program in Oregon called "Free Geek" which is a program that gives away computers for free - they use Ubuntu. I'm not there for the building per se, but rather, to learn Ubuntu.
