Tips for Housekeeping

When my sister and I stayed at the Grand Californian Resort, we called the front desk for extra pillows, shampoo and soap. We did tip the guy $5. The guy seemed to be happy. :)

The whole tipping thing, not accepting tips as Cast Members, can seem iffy at times. I know the reason for it, it's supposed to be our pleasure to provide the magic and we're not working to look for tips. I'm all for that and agree with it. But if someone genuinely wants to tip us for a job well done, then we should be allowed to accept it. I have refused all tips offered to me, and some were pretty nice tips too. Once though, someone put a 10 in my hand (thinking I was just gonna shake the guy's hand) and he was just about gone before I realized what had happened. It was Christmas time and I helped him get a center seat after Fantasmic started. I didn't feel bad about it, I didn't notify my manager either. I put 10 dollars of gas in my car that night!

So I guess from a guest's perspective, Do what you think is appropriate and don't worry about Disney ethics. If they take it, they deserve it. If they don't then you have more money to spend on souvenirs.

The Disney Employee handbook does not apply to me or my family. These are dark economic times, and we're scraping to get to Disney, but once we're there--we're not scrimping. This is the vacation we've been waiting for, and if we get good service, we'll pay for it.
Now I know how to do so while making sure the intended recipients get the money. I'll leave cash in an envelope marked "for mousekeeping". That way it doesn't get taken by management. Maybe the little token will help stimulate the economy on some level.

On our honeymoon at WDW in 2000 we got a session with a Disney photographer around the MK, it was one of the package option freebies. He let us climb up part of Cinderella castle (where we learned that pigeons own that area) and did a great job in creating some lasting memories. I tipped him $20, he said that they must refuse 3 times, so he said "no thank you" three times in a row rather quickly and then took it. We laughed and went on our way.

It did generate a SGT, when we got down, some SG's went through the gate, he told them they can't go up there and they ignored him. He didn't want to hold us up, so he just let it go.

Something we do after reading about it:

Do not leave one large amount on your last day. Your housekeeper may change from day to day.
Leave a small amount each day. This way everyone gets a piece.

I tipped $3.00 a day on my solo trip, & when traveling with DH we leave $4.00 a day all in envelope marked Mousekeeping..
