Re: Medical Question

I had a excisional biopsy/thyroidectomy a while ago for a thyroid problem, and had General Anesthesia for that one. While I've never undergone Local (and, given that they were opening my neck, I'm fairly sure it wasn't a option), I will say that I did quite prefer the total unconciousness of the General.

They started running it as I was being wheeled off to the surgery room, next thing I know, I'm waking up in the recovery room. I had a splitting headache for a while afterwards, but generally no mal effects.

Not sure if that's what you're looking for, but hopefully I can be of help.

In regard to general, they have a new thing on the line, very popular with cardiac patients, and even for surgery. You are fully awake during any procedure, able to respond and apparently feel, but it's also hypnotic and any pain is transferred into an euphoric/funny emotion. Recovery time is almost nothing, and afterward you have no memory of the procedure.

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled they put me under general. Because it was not a full operating room, they allowed my mom to stay with me until I was fully under. My mom loves talking to me about a whole conversation I had with her and the doctors after the drugs started taking effect. I remember none of it, just as the doctors (apparently) told me would be the case.

Anesthesia is a funny thing.

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

True, I think the idea for the general is to knock people out if the procedure could upset them, from sound.

I remember taking a guy to the E.R. that had to have a wound cleaned out, then stitched up. Guy passed out with the sound of the skin being punctured and the suture being pulled through.

Kinda of funny, as he had survived a gunshot wound, so you think he would be a bit more tough!

You're telling me. When I went in for a certain procedure done only to males to keep them from having more kids, they told me that the anesthetic would make me groggy or sleep. I was awake and reading a magazine through the whole procedure.

Later in the recovery room, another guy was wheeled in after me, and he was high as a kite, saying things like, "Man, this stuff is better than a whole six-pack!"

I was alert and clear-headed, so I was kind of ticked off -- I mean, I don't drink or do drugs, so this was my one chance to get a buzz "legally," and it was doing nothing for me! :D:

For those interested, the procedure was uneventful, and the local more than adequate. Biopsy results in a week.

My doctor still thinks he's funny. Nurse had me all prepped with my rear end facing the door and his first remark on arrival was, "Well, that's a fine way to greet someone!"

I simply replied, "Last time we met I cracked a smile. Thought you'd appreciate the variety of a reversal."

I will second that but will have my eyes closed tight, be blindfolded and have on my head a paper sack or two.

You guys remind me of SWMBO. She loves to watch House and CSI, but keeps a pillow handy to hide behind for the "icky parts".

I *did* label the thread "Medical Question", did y'all *not* think it might have some icky parts?

As for icky, it was *me* with my Tigger boxers around my ankles, not you, remember?
