I think a whole introduction and discussion with Lenoard Maltin would be great. A little history lesson about Joel Chandler Harris and why he wrote the stories to begin with, and maybe some footage from his home. Then a discussion about the reception of the film at the time. But let's put some perspective on it and not just the rumors about what's in the film.Doctor McKey wrote:I have a copy of Song of the South at home... and agree that the PC police need to back off... I have heared of rumblings in the media world that Disney may release SoS in the states with some alterations or atlease a disclaimer.

Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.

Song of the South is to racism that a Big Mac is to fat people.. I mean it like this.. you are going to see what you want out of it... Is a Big Mac making people fat, or is fat people just eating big macs.....Amphigorey wrote:You know, it's not "PC" to say that "Song of the South" was pretty fucking racist.

Amen to the Doctor.
This has long been stuck in my craw and I wait for the day I can shake it loose.
Pretty soon people will start getting offended at everything they see/hear and make others not be able to get married or adopt children.
Or heaven forbid, make choices for the rest of us in their blind unknowing "my opinion is right regardless of facts" attitude.
But we are past that, right? Right?

Re: Song Of The South
The story is in a time of slavery but in the story the slaves are treated much better than some places. Uncle Rhemus could have dragged the boy back to the plantation but instead taught him and opened the kid's eyes to the right choices. It is just a story to me and I love the movie. Uncle Rhemus taught kids through stories. People do not remember lectures but they remember them stories.
Uncle Remus was willing to get into trouble covering up for the kid. The old lady setting and knitting because she trusted Remus. I do not see this as racist but about an old man who was trusted with a boy and who would lie to keep the kid out of trouble. The mother realizing how the old man was willing to protect her child. The interaction between granny and Remus. Some people look at the bad stuff but the story is full of good stuff.
Thank you for a film I have been waiting to see for my entire life. Read some of his stories before but wanted to see the movie.
