Working on Churchy's computer
Re: Working on Churchy's computer
Hey CBeilby, I've been getting alot of "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" messages. I'm getting tired of sending error reports to Microsoft. Any idea what causes this? I recently cleaned out my browser cache and done other maintenence, but I also still get other messages, plus around 9 p.m. the internet starts to slow down. Are they doing maintenence at that time, or is it because the rest of the world is waking up and working?

Install Firefox. It is more stable and a LOT more secure than IE. I only use IE when I absolutely have to which is getting less and less often. I very rarely have any problems with Firefox and the rare times that it does crash I can usually restore my previous session and be right back where I was.felinefan wrote:Hey CBeilby, I've been getting alot of "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" messages. Windows issues, I'll give my normal "format and reinstall" response :)felinefan wrote:Hey CBeilby, I've been getting alot of "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" messages. Firefox is GREAT, you can also look into Safari from Apple.Shorty82 wrote:Install Firefox. It is more stable and a LOT more secure than IE. If all else fails, dump the PC and buy a mac ;)

Or as a former co-worker used to say ... "nuke it and pave it"ktulu wrote:Windows issues, I'll give my normal "format and reinstall" response :)
Oddly enough, that's also their solution on what to do with Iraq.
(this same person managed to pretty much bring down the entire network at the HS they worked at by "ghosting" an entire lab at once from a network server, and then wondered why the network connection was so slow)

Yeah, you're running defective software!felinefan wrote:I've been getting alot of "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" messages. I'm getting tired of sending error reports to Microsoft. Any idea what causes this?
From fellow SGTers, or from unimportant people?I recently cleaned out my browser cache and done other maintenence, but I also still get other messages...
I'm going to guess that by 9pm you've been browsing long enough that your browser cache is getting full and you're starting to page memory. Try checking the page file usage when the slowdown starts and see if it isn't markedly larger than when the Internet appears to be faster.... plus around 9 p.m. the internet starts to slow down. Are they doing maintenence at that time, or is it because the rest of the world is waking up and working?
Or you could do what I did several years ago -- switched to Firefox. It runs fine under Windows, and is much less likely to bog down or crash. Available free online at www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/. It even has it's own smilie here!

Sorry for not getting here sooner, and I'm just going to echo the same advice, with the exception of the nuke and pave option, as to remove Internet Exploder means to fully reinstall Windows (every version of Windows post Win98 has had Internet Exploder so intertwined with the damn OS that you can't remove it.)

Re: Working on Churchy's computer
I wasn't talking about nuking/paving IE ... I was talking about nuking/paving everything ... Windows Pre-XP seemed to start to develop pretty major registry problems after about 8 months, with some regularity, on a lot of machines I worked on. Windows XP seems to be a bit better about it, I haven't had to reformat/reinstall in the 3+ years that I've had this computer.CBeilby wrote:Sorry for not getting here sooner, and I'm just going to echo the same advice, with the exception of the nuke and pave option, as to remove Internet Exploder means to fully reinstall Windows (every version of Windows post Win98 has had Internet Exploder so intertwined with the damn OS that you can't remove it.)

Re: Working on Churchy's computer
As some of you know I have SID, sensory i dysfunction. I barely got home and SID was way high as in nail chewing and yapping and other things. I get home to check the computer and all was gone and the computer had rebooted. I closed one foxfire, oh goody now there is no record of past foxfire windows.
Mom screams and I am to serve the $81 dinner I brought but I tell her I have to potty and all she can think about is her f.ing dinner and not my body or computer. I HAVE NO INTERNET CONNECT AND THE ROUTER IS NOT RESPONDING TO RESET. Mom and i are screaming, SID blaring and I am sorting through food. Mom has to be fed. I cannot figure what is wrong but I am in a cyber cafe crying and freaking out a little kid. I had to take $20 out of the bank and the $200 in groceries is setting in the car in the hot sun. I just cannot go further and cannot afford to let the groceries rot in the sun but the SID is flaring, I am so tired and worn out from shopping and crying.
Why did he leave the computer with no connection? I am so tired and thbis is not fair. Please anyone if you can call Cbeilby or Purpura do so, I WANT MY COMPUTER. I was going to have a nice dinner with mom but now all is lost and I am going to through dinner out as I am too tired to eat. Prime rib, baked tater, sweet tater, shrimp, asperagus, steak, and pork chops. My day is ruined and for what. I knew today was too good to be true.

Re: Working on Churchy's computer
As far as I know, the connection was active when I left. Admittedly, I could have, and probably should have double checked it. However if there is no connection, it's due to the cable not being properly connected.
As to having to leave when I did, I had to leave due to family commitments, namely going to my parents house to help my 91 year old grandmother with doing some cleaning chores that we had started earlier in the day, and that she was unable to do by herself.
