Stupid Guest Tricks

I use endearments frequently, and haven't heard any complaints yet (I hope there haven't been!). Unfortunately, its because I have a VERY difficult time with name/face coordination, ever since the advent of a medical condition, and I'd rather call somebody "hon," "sweetie" or "darlin'" than "hey, you." Seems more polite. Then again, I'm over 40 and have a very thick Southern accent - my students must think I'm their grandmother or channeling Minnie Pearl or something!

If they're saying it 'cause they mean it, Sure. Terms of endearment are fine.

If they're saying it 'cause they don't want to bother learning my name... not so much. I'll cut them some slack if we haven't actually been introduced, but after that? It does get on my nerves.

If it's an older man saying it to a younger woman, it is certainly inappropriate. I sure as hell wouldn't appreciate being called "sweetie" or "darling" in the workplace. I have a name, thankyouverymuch.

A friend's wife worked as a flight attendant. She got all the typical coffee, tea or me stuff but the final straw was when some drunk called her "Sugar britches."

One of my favorite Snoopy cartoons is one where in about 3 panels different Peanut's characters walk by him and say "Hi Snoopy", "Hi Snoop", "Good Puppy" and the like. In the last frame he sits there thinking "Nobody ever calls me Sugar Britches". I liked it so much that on a sorority jersey in college I had Sugar Britches put on the back.
