Butch was Bozo's sidekick, a little blond boy in a ringmaster's costume. The lucky kid was given a ringmaster coat and hat, just like the one Butch wore, to wear the rest of the day. Kind of a take-off on an old T.V. contest show, "Queen For A Day".

Butch was a common, informal name for a boy, queen was as in female ruler. Bozo didn't do the Queen for a Day show, you'd have to dig into 50s T.V. history for that.

I mean, who wouldn't want to be Bozo's sidekick? This was when the circus wasn't being attacked by wingnut animal rights activists. I mean, I think animals should be treated well, but I have a hard time thinking a business whose major investment and biggest draw is going to mistreat their animals. Of course, back then, you could spank your kid for misbehaving and not have someone call child protective services on you.

Unless you can get ahold of someone who did circus work back in the day who can confirm or deny that animals were mistreated. You push any animal too far, and there's going to be consequences. If a circus owner or trainer is aware of that, they're smart.

Bozo usually wasn't in a REAL circus. he was mostly on T.V., and would have interesting thigs for kids. usually he would introduce cartoons, and sometimes have other kids type of acts on his show. At least the one that I saw almost every day, after school.

Yeah, I don't recall if there was ever anything about animal mistreatment.

AS far as I know, the Bozo show was limited to a television studio, and whatever resources the studio could produce.

I was talking about the way the PETA wingnuts come out of the woodwork protesting that circuses abuse their animals everytime the circus comes to town.

Hmm, don't think PETA even existed when Bozo was on!
