This has happened before, I think. A Batman train came in and nailed a park service attendant while trying to retrieve a hat for a guest at Six Flags Great Adventure I think.
While the park service attendant was just trying to be a nice guy, this guest was an idiot. How 'bout asking someone to retrieve your lost item? And if you were trying to touch the ride? MORON!

RIP Bud Hurlbut.
You will be missed.

Re: Decapitation at Six Flags Over Georgia
I read a story on MSN and it said he and his friend were there with a church group.
Have to agree that he is an instant Darwin winner.
Wonder if the riders saw his skull do a fly by as they enjoyed the ride.
I'd really like to hear the thoughts of the friend that was with him, but I have a feeling that he is going to be very quiet for a long time.

Re: Decapitation at Six Flags Over Georgia
step back folks and walk in the shoes of his family. who amongst us has not done some stupid trick before. Whether a trick on his friends, coveting someone else's hat, or retrieving his lost hat the point is that a young man is dead. He might have been the best janitor in the world or he might have become a preacher, doctor or corporate leader. I opened this and cried so hard because I think of the boy's momma and daddy crying and so sad that they lost the precious son.
How would you feel if your kid got hurt or died and people were laughing and saying that it was a good thing. Yeah he did a stupid thing but what was the rest of his life like. Was he a great student, mentor to classmates, great athlete, religiously devout, donor of time and money, and a good kid at home wh helped out?
A sad day for SGT when we celebrate the tragic mistake of someone.

I don't know if you heard about it on the news, but my neighbor died because he was riding in a shopping cart being pushed by a car. Creates very mixed feelings, as he was an idiot, but he also was a person. I think the further removed you are from the person, the more you realize that they did something really stupid.

For one, I don't feel very sorry for the parents or child. Sure it's a tragic thing, but it was very stupid. It comes down to 2 things: 1-stupidity on the child and 2-stupidity on the parents.
Whenever you see something like this, you have to step back and ask why he did it and why he wasn't taught to NOT do something incredibly stupid. Yeah OK, the parents aren't going to say "Don't you ever jump a six foot fence or two covering a roller coaster in this theme park" but there are other lessons to be taught throughout life, ie don't do something stupid like this. If I ignored a sign when I was a kid and did something the sign told me NOT to do, then my dad would spank me/slap in the head and ask "what the heck are you thinkin?! don't you do that!!" I learned quick. Obviously, the parents didn't do the simple "Follow the rules and the signs" lesson with the kid. It's like those who drive drunk. My dad told me if i ever went out drinking and got drunk that I was to call a cab or call him. He doesn't care what time of the night is but if i EVER drove home drunk, he'd really teach me not to do it again.
I never found out what that lesson is.

Re: Decapitation at Six Flags Over Georgia
I am very sorry for his family. By the Grace of God, my son somehow has lived to the age of 28 and he did a lot of stupid things when he was a teenager. And I don't think I was a bad or stupid parent. (My ex-husband, on the other hand,... ;) )
Teenagers love to do daring, dangerous things and they think they are invincible. This silly kid is dead because he thought it would be cool and that nothing bad would happen to him scaling two fences and entering a restricted area. Maybe some kid somewhere will hear about it and stop and think before they do something equally stupid.
I agree that it was a very stupid thing to do but teenagers often don't think about the consequences.

"Excuse me, are those ducks real?"
"Yes, sir, but the water is fake."

Re: Decapitation at Six Flags Over Georgia
Wow. I just read all of these posts. A young man is dead, and his family and friends are mourning him. We are here discussing how the planet is better off without him, and what bad parents he must have had? Stupid it was. I would rather that my child did something stupid, then did or said something hateful.

Wow. Ever done anything that you knew you shouldn't? Never? Perhaps your intelligently perfect life hasn't been worth living?
I came here because I admire castmembers and think that they have a hard job. I came here to show support and give you a word of encouragement. If your experiences with the pubic have led you to this level of jadedness, I suspect that you and all of the guests (both SG and otherwise) would be better off if you sought other employment. I suspect that you'd be happier too.

Re: Decapitation at Six Flags Over Georgia

While I agree that a loss of human life is sad, the fact remains that the death rate is the same everywhere, that is, one per person.
Most people do not choose when or where they die, and to observe or hear about a death, as a result of a very stoopid action on their part, re-affirms the randomness of the situation and the foolishness of his actions.
The fact that HE chose to ignore not one, but TWO six foot fences, and numerious warning signs shows that he was indeed stupid.
I disagree with your evaluation that people here are jaded. I think that those of us that are older, and have seen human nature at its worst (and best) in various situations regard something like this as a silly way to die.
I don't think that the CM's here need to seek other employment, as I have read some of the posts here and realize that they try very hard to be good at their jobs, DESPITE the creature called an SG working aginst them.
The truth is that the poor unfortunate boy that lost his life, was displaying the very heart of being an SG, that is, ignoring sinage, ignoring barracades, and most importantly, ignoring common sense in not asking himself, "WHY do they have this area barracaded off from the public?"
Enjoy the SGT web site for what it is!
