I know some folks who carry -- including my own parents -- and many who do not. I fully understand the discomfort many have with guns and I don't fault either decision.
Do I carry?
Ain't tellin'. Guess at your own risk. :)

Why aren't there any Columbine type shootings in inter city schools?
Because the kids know all the other kids are packing heat.

I always remember the saying: "An armed society is a polite society"

In Britain, they made the police stop carrying guns as well as making it a felony to own a gun. But the criminals were armed, and the police had only nightsticks. Not very effective. So now they've gone back to allowing police to carry firearms. For you John Wayne fans, there's the film "Brannigan" that illustrates this.
Personally, I don't care for guns. People who own guns and have little kids all too often end up losing a kid to their own gun. And people who own guns for protection usually end up having their own weapon turned upon them. Crooks know where guns are usually kept and go for them before they go for the valuables.

Do you have a cite for this statement? Crooks don't like to hang around, especially if they know someone is home. They get what they can and get out. If you want to see a show that shows how thieves operate:

Coined by famed writer, Jerry Pournelle.
To which his writing partner, Larry Niven, added, "After the first few bloody weeks!"
Yeah, I was there when they said it. Best damn class I ever took at UCLA: "The Literature of Science Fiction" with those two as instructors.

I follow the advice "don't depend on a weapon that can be taken away from you and used against you". I specialize in "non standard" weaponry and also practice defence against those weapons. With some of my weapons, you would be amazed at how much damage I can do by letting someone take it away from me and let them destroy themselves with it.

As a gun owner, I have often found that the people who most often speak out in favor of anti gun legislation fall into two general catagories. Those who are afraid of guns or what guns can do; or those who have been or know someone who has been a victim of gun violence. Both of these positions are highly charged and emotional. This is why there is no way that these two camps will reach a compromise.
I don't want to start a flame war here, but only trying to state my opinion. Take it or leave it at that.

It seems like the loudest screeching regarding gun control comes from the NRA and other pro gun groups and individuals.

There are laws on the books about firearms that are not enforced or that have been violated when someone like that DOES get a gun (illegally) and involved in a shooting. yet instead of punishing the shooter and charging him/her with the violations, they want even MORE laws. You can't legisate crazy people out of society.
