The accounts I've read indicated Walt wanted to put Disney entertainment into the resort although not necessarily rides. The Country Bears were originally intended for this resort and repurposed for Disneyland only after the resort deal fell through.
Actually the resort area was called Mineral King. The project ultimately died after the Sierra Club protested it, fearing Walt Disney would turn it into a mountain Disneyland and it would bring traffic and pollution to the area. Whether this would have happened to the extent that the Sierra Club claims is probably moot at this point. The Mineral King area is now part of the Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park.
On the subject of the Disney Crusie lines, I hope they'll do another trip through the Panama Canel. That must have been an awesome cruise.

In 2008 one of the Ships is going back to California, so there should be canal repo cruises. Though that is not set in stone.

Close enough to stone -- they're taking reservations. I'm already booked for one of the Mexican Riviera cruises.

It's the Disney Magic that's headed west again, the poor old Wonder gets to stay home.

I better start saving now then. I don't know what it is,but ever since I read in the fourth grade about how people would travel to California by sea through the Isthmus of Panama (before the canal was built),I wanted to do the same thing too. Of course I would much rather do it on a luxury cruise ship than hacking my way through dense jungle foilage risking malaria. :)
Traveling through the canal just sounds so cool.

Sadly, It looks like I will not be going on the Disney Cruise through the Panama Canal in May 2008. I stopped by the AAA office and after a call to Disney, the voyage is completly booked. :( I can't even get on a wait list unless I want a suite (which I can't afford-even this cruise was going to be a stretch).
I guess the voyage going eastward is still available but I wanted to go west.
The good news is I still might be going on a cruise through the canal next year-just on a different cruise line
Hey Zazu, I think we need cruise ship smilies. How about one where a SG is missing the boat? :)

I have lots of cruise ship smilies, but I only found one that means "No Cruise". How's this? :nocruise:
