Unattended Items

I work (as all you Disney CMs do) at one of the top terrorist targets in the country. Unattended bags, jackets or even strollers are a huge concern for our security department. Usually if they spot one, they close off the area and have the bomb sniffing dog come up. Huge overreaction IMO, but at least it makes them feel better.

I was very paranoid about that sort of thing throughout my Disney career. I've called the dogs out a few times, too.

But I'd rather get security involved for nothing a hundred times than just once not calling security and have something explode in a crowd.

I am bumping up this topic because I have several stories to share.

One is from tonight. I was staking my spot in DCA for the Electrical Parade. One come a family. They sit set their stuff down and spread their blanket to save their spot of the electrical parade. Then, they just left to ride Tower. They turn to me and think that I was going to watch their stuff for them. They were gone for a good 45 minutes.

Another time, I was waiting for the fireworks when this mexican lady puts down her stuff to save her spot and leaves. She doesn't return until close to 9 PM. During that time, a n off - duty CM friend of mine calls Security and they come out to inspect the stuff. After, they take it way. When the lady returns, she discovers that her stuff is missing. We told her Security took it away and that's the end of the story.

Last story was when I was a CM working Fantasmic!, a guest came up to me saying that a blanket was unoccupied for a couple of hours. So, as a result, I folded it up and put it in the planters near Pirates. The owner returns saying that her stuff is missing. She went to get food with her child while the rest of her family was off riding rides.

I've called Security a few times about unattended bags. I see an unattended bag I'll give the guest a few minutes to come back for it then I'm phoning Security. The other night I found an unattended bag on Center Street. After giving the guest a few minutes I called Security to report it and went back out there to keep the area clear. A minute or two later the owner came back and claimed the bag so I went back in and called Security back to cancel the response.

Disney policy says not to touch, move, or handle any unattended bags, call Security to report it and then keep the area around the bag clear until Security arrives. It says to use a house phone to call it in, not a radio, Nextel, cell phone, or other wireless device.

It might be an overreaction in most cases but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

What kind of morons would leave attended stuff in a theme park and expect it to still be there when they return?

Shouldn't surprise me though as it reminds me of the moron at the airport back in the days when you had to line up roughly three days before your flight to get a good seat on Southwest. I was one of those anal retentives who didn't mind plunking my butt in line an hour ahead to snag an exit row. So one day I was first in line, and some guy comes up behind me, plops down all his bags, and says, "Will you watch these?" I said, "No, I don't want anything to do with unattended luggage." He left 'em anyway. More people joined me in the line...some asked, "Are those your bags" and I shrugged and said, "No, some guy left 'em there" so they got kicked off to the side. He came back an hour later and was pretty miffed that his place in line was gone, but oh well. He had apparently gone off to eat since I didn't see him for the entire hour of waiting and he had food with him when he returned to board. Uh, dude, what makes you think you're important enough to think you can sit in comfortable, eat, or do who knows what and still get a good seat while the rest of us have to sit on the floor to get one?

My experience was actually post-9/11, and believe me, I toyed with the idea of calling Security over and saying, "Hey, some guy who was acting very erractically left these here and disappeared!" The only thing that kept me from doing it was self-interest...can you imagine the ensuing flight delay as the evacuated the terminal and blew those suckers up?

For the record I am not a deranged terrorist or a nut case. But if I were, I would not carry a bomb, bomb parts, or weapon in any item that can be easily search. Hello... the items would be carried on or (sick as this sounds) in the human body. Fot the most part I think the bag checks are made to make the general public feel safer.

I am a well versed in Security, being that I spent 6 years of it.... It is true, bag checks for about 95% of time are for making everyone else feel better....

Once, long before 9/11, I read a newspaper account of a box being found somewhere, and the bomb squad was called to blow it up.

After the blast, they discovered the box had held--three little kittens.

Miraculously, they survived the explosion, and were adopted. Apparently, they weren't injured, or at least not much. But can you imagine what that must've done to their little ears? Ouch!

My parents have a Savannah. They had to cat proof the house. Yup, I can see our cat doing the same thing.
