Re: Marsupial on the Mend
A brief update:
Got my cast off and my stitches out today. Everything seems to be healing nicely, although to see my leg for the first time -- looking like something out of a gruesome horror movie -- was not very pleasant. Still, it felt good to get out of the cast...
...for a few minutes, at least. After the stitches were out they put another cast on. I was hoping to switch to the Zazu Boot (tm pending), but no such luck. I'll be in this cast for another 4 weeks, and then I should be in the boot -- and even starting to put a little weight on my foot.
Fortunately the new cast is sleeker and lighter than the hunk of concrete they put on me after the surgery, so it's a little easier to get around. I'm working my way back into the world outside my home a little at a time, though it can be exhausting. I'll be going back to work beginning on Friday, and being able to sit and work for hours in court is my biggest concern, but I'm sure it'll be manageable with a few adjustments.
I still miss ringing chords with VM, but I also know that with the District competition in 3 weeks they are having a lot of extra rehearsals, and I can't say I miss having to spend that much time away from my family! Hey, tonight I took my kids to bed, for the first time in over two weeks. That was a treat!

Re: Marsupial on the Mend
Sorry for not posting an update in a while!
I'm kind of in a holding pattern at the moment, still in the same cast that was put on almost four weeks ago. Life is a lot easier now, or at least a lot less stressful, because I've done just about everything my day-to-day life requires using the scooter (pictured in my latest blog entry, "Life on Wheels") -- work, church, home, eating out, etc. -- and found a way to make it work. It's nice not having many "unknowns" left.
If all goes well (please pray!), then on Tuesday I will get the cast off, assuming a new x-ray shows the healing is on schedule. I'm not getting any pain from my ankle or foot at all, just mild discomfort or fatigue from leaving it down (without elevating it) for too long, but that's mainly a function of it being in a cast. So I'm hopeful that everything is healing as it should be.
After the cast is off, I should be into the Zazu boot, and then comes the fun task of learning to walk again. Since my ankle was rebuilt to correct a misalignment that's been with me all of my life, I'm told that walking will feel differently than it ever has before. Should be a fun experience.
So, hopefully the pain is well behind me and I'll soon be taking steps (ha!) toward standing on two feet again. Actually, the biggest "pain" now is that next week the Vocal Majority gets to spend four days in the resort town of Hot Springs, Arkansas, at a luxury hotel, eating great food, relaxing and sightseeing, at little cost to the members. The chorus will perform four shows over four days (sold out for months, with a waiting list) to an extremely appreciative audience, and otherwise the time is their own.
I'll be here rolling around and working to try to pay the medical bills. Sigh. :( :)

Once you are healed up, you'll need a trip to DLR to make sure you can handle another trip to WDW!

All you need do is get a doctor to write it out that you need "rehabilitation" by going on a trip!!!!!ktulu wrote:Once you are healed up, you'll need a trip to DLR to make sure you can handle another trip to WDW!

That's the whole point of the surgery! Get better so I can go to Anaheim with the VM next July! (Oh yeah, and also compete at Internationals...)ktulu wrote:Once you are healed up, you'll need a trip to DLR to make sure you can handle another trip to WDW!
Sure... My health care coverage is wonderful, just so long as I never need to use it...GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:All you need do is get a doctor to write it out that you need "rehabilitation" by going on a trip!!!!!

First of all, I am so very sorry that I wasn't here to chime in with my two cents during your recovery- honestly I thought about you so much more often than you know! Usually when I was at the U and saw somebody all casted up and trying to navigate (saw it a lot!)
I'm sorry you're going to miss that VM trip...just think of all the ones you'll be able to take in the future though without worrying about a bum leg!(ringing chords is a great phrase, never heard that going to make a note of it. No pun intended. Or was it???)
You have been so brave through it all and though I know PT will be a challenge, you can do it man! I believe in youuuuuu! (Note to self, never give pep talks this far after coffee. They just don't turn out do they? LOL I'm trying! I think the extra hour of sleep has me loopy)
Have you posted more Virtual DW stuff anywhere? That bit you showed before had me trying to climb into the screen. If I could pull that off (a-la the girl in the comic book in that a-ha video in the 80's or a reverse of Giselle in Enchanted) now that would be a fun time! Disney world without any SG's- no hurricanes, love bugs, or heelies!
Okay I am certain I am making absolutely no sense but I refused to log off before posting to this! Maybe that's not such a good thing LOL
Keeping a good thought for you that the cast comes off Tuesday will keep everything crossed hoping!
