Disney dollars for kids
Disney dollars for kids
As some of you know, my family and I are going to WDW in 5 days. I been looking on the net and I see that there are these Disney Dollars available. I thought this would be a great idea for the kids. We promised each kidlet $100 spending money for their trip as part of them passing the school year with A's & B's deal we made.
Is there any advantage/disadvantage to Disney Dollars? I wouldn't think so I figure it would be dollar for dollar. Just thought it would be fun for them to carry their own cash with Mickey and the gang on it.
Also where do I get the Disney dollars?

I know at DLR, you can get DD at any ticket booth, at city hall, or at the Emporium--so that is probably the same at WDW.GrUvGrL wrote:As some of you know, my family and I are going to WDW in 5 days. DD are used just like cash anywhere in the park-- for food, souveniers, etc-- and can be used at food carts, unlike gift cards. So these would be cool for your "kidlets" as long as you want to trust them with that much money at one time. (I don't know how old your kidlets are... )

I would also guess you can get Disney Dollars at your resort. I know from a money-handling Flash training program I took that you can request Disney Dollars as part of your change for a purchase, as long as the CM's register has any.

Boy kidlet is 10, Girl kidlet is 8. What I have decided is to let them carry $20 a day they can spend it or not... if they find something in the park that comes out to more then $20 for their day, they can take a loan out to cover their purchase from dad or I, whch they will repay when we get to the resort.

Re: Disney dollars for kids
My 5 year old loves her DD when we go. She gets an allowance each day. (I put it in a sealed envelope and label the days) No loans allowed. If she sees something she wants over that amount she knows she has to save that day's money and add it to however many days it will take to buy it. You would be surprised how fast they change their mind (or completely forget) about some outrageously priced item that they only wanted as a whim. ;) You dont always need to purchase that product at that location. Most of the stores on the property have the same items with the exception of a few. If there is something you can find elsewhere, ask at your front desk if they can help track it down before you leave.
She usually has some left over cause she is too busy wanting to do everything else then buying stuff. Like BW said you can request the change (paper money) back in DD's as long as the register has some in it.
Dont forget you can have your purchases sent to your resort if you are staying on property up until 2 days (I THINK:confused :) before you leave. It usually takes 24 hours for it to get to your resort and you pick it up in the gift shop by showing the receipt.

In my area there's not usually many Disney Dollars in our drawers. I only have a guest use them as payment occasionally and that's the only way they get into the drawer. I can see the benefit of them, especially for kids, but while you can ask and we'll try don't assume you'll be able to get the change back in Disney Dollars.Big Wallaby wrote:I would also guess you can get Disney Dollars at your resort. Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long.

Lucky kids!
We always made our kids wait until the end of the day to decide which souvenir to buy, after they had been looking in every shop and compared all the possibilities....
That way we didn't have to carry around the items all day as well!

Re: Disney dollars for kids
I've said many times that I'm a huge fan of Disney Dollars. I'm guessing there are probably a couple of places you can't use them (there are exceptions to every rule, right?) but I haven't found those places. I've even sat in a bar paying for my drinks in D$--It's surreal on a lot of levels.
I've also heard about people doing stuff like (if your kids get a normal allowance when they're not at Disney parks) giving them part of their allowance in D$ and part in normal currency to encourage them to save for an upcoming trip. As an adult, I like them on a more intellectual level: I'm in a complete world with everything I need, essentially cities full of people, high-capacity and very efficient transportation, world class art and culture and even a special language (name to be determined), so why wouldn't I use the local currency? :D:

We always picked up our Disney Dollars at the local Disney Store until they closed it down several months ago. You can also order them online from Disney but of course there's a shipping fee.

They will get cash back on the dollars they use. Some people will buy $20 Disney Dollars on their credit or debit card so that they avoid bank withdrawal fees and other bank fees. Buy popcorn with a $5 and you get $2 plus change. In the long run you will end up with coins and possibly real money.
