Mom is one of those people who don't go to doctors unless she absolutely has to. More than once she's felt bad, and called my sister who lives a few miles from us, asking if she thinks she should go to the hospital!
Right now, I have a case of shingles around my right eye, and I did some searching online for low-cost treatment options. Since international travel isn't an option, I looked up free and low-cost clinics, and found one of each within a reasonable distance of me. I finally told mom about my eye, and of course she's like, "You mean we gotta spend $59 to treat it?" Her doctor's visits cost her nothing, BTW. I can just imagine her reaction to free clinics. She grew up in a family when you didn't get stuff for free unless you worked for it. And I don't want to hear her ranting about how free clinics have people in as patients that bring their whole families when it's just one of them that needs services, etc.. And if I were to get a corneal abrasion she'd probably make me wait until I end up losing my eye, and then she'll be bitching about the cost of the artificial eye! Reminds me of Hettie/Hetty Green, The Witch of Wall Street. (Google it.)
