Hey kids. So if anyone hear has been watching the news or surfing the internet long enough... You'll have heard about the drug raid at a california university... That's my school. I live here in the dorms, they rounded up 100 known drug dealers and gang members in our school gymnasium.

So I was just curious. How far out did this get? I need to figure out whih family members I need to reassure of my non-cocaine related activities....

Sorry, but it was big news here in Florida.

Well, it wasn't big news to ex-Californians like me who were familiar with that school's reputation, but the locals just ate that story up.

We're known for our partying, not so much out drug use. If you want drugs, go to UC Santa Cruz. My friend drops acid with her professors. The good thing is that our standards raise every year, so eventually the crazy people won't be able to get in...

It's funny how sensationalistic this story is. Most people I've talked to were like "college students taking drugs? so what?" Maybe it's a slow news week. Lindsay Lohan hasn't been up to any hijinks lately...

My 18 year old bought a laptop. against our advice. Hooked up to internet. against our advice. Played video games on same for past month, just got his 1st month's internet bill- 2 dollars shy of $5,000.00.
Apparently he has a download "allowance" and video games that have streaming video are charged as downloads
He called the company who SAYS that they will disconnect his new internet service and forgive the bill (he had a contract for $60.00/month x 2 years....)
Reality is Harsh. Listen to your parents.

In other news of poor choices of young adults, my 21 year old kid brother, drove his car with the oil light on for 3 months, and now his engine is no more. When asked why he didn't do something about it, he claimed he checked the dipstick, but couldn't get a good read... so he decided to ignore it. That's right, he was driving with so little oil the dipstick came back dry... and now he claims my parents should pay for a new engine for him, because they sold him the worse of the two available cars... even tho his car would have been fine if he payed attention to the warning light when it came on. He furthermore attempts to blame the car for being substandard because I got to buy (for Kelly Blue Book -2000) the Civic which was new when my father bought it in 98 and he had to buy (for Kelly Blue book - 2000) the Saturn, which was used when my parents bought it in 2003, and which, by the way was supposed to be a car for my brother and I to share when I came back home from college for the summer, but which he decided was HIS while I was gone Freshman year, leaving my mother and I to share the Civic, (meanwhile my father had his own Accord.) So yeah... I bought the Civic, and my mom used the money to go towards her OWN Accord, which she certainly wasn't going to sell my brother, so he could take it with him to college, forcing him to buy the Saturn he'd been driving since Jr year of high school, or find a used car outside the family. He of course claims that the expense of the New vs. Used car means he is owed money, despite my having paid for the Civic, and the fact that they paid his gas and maintenance all thru High School, and I took the School Buss for all 4 years of high school, never dreaming of insisting I NEEDED a car once I was 16, like he did. Then I went off to college and took the municipal buss or walked, or borrowed my mums car from the employee lot if I needed to go up the thru way (she worked at my college) with the caveat that it was back, with a full tank of gas, when quitting time came round. My brother is proof that sometimes no amount of good parenting will be able to suppress someone's overblown sense of entitlement.

Oh... and they're NOT paying for his new engine. So he's got one more thing to add to the list of things he's entitled to that they never gave him.

It is not always the parents, but we live in a culture of entitlement- when my son brought home nearly all D's the first part of his last semester of High School, I revoked my promise to support him, pay for books and tuition. He could work and pay his own way for college, as I did.And Pay Rent. "Oh, that's the old-fashioned way, nobody does that anymore, you just don't want to have to pay for me to go", he said.

2 more weeks of High School, I sure hope he passes.

Ain't kids grand? We sent my step daughter off to college paying her tuition (her biological father refused to contribute a dime), room and board and a little mad money. All we expected is she get good grades and get an education that would help her get a decent start in life.

I sent the check in for her last quarter of her last year and discover a month later that she had dropped out. I laughed, I cried, I kissed $6500 goodbye. I also cut off the monthly room/board/mad money check.

We started getting calls from relatives asking why we weren't helping her out. During one of these calls I unloaded on the caller. That pretty much ended that crap.

Then we hear she's telling all her friends we're rat bastards for not sending her money as all we do is party in Hawaii.

Over a year later we hear from her. She's trying to get her life back together, got a new boy friend, is earning money to return to school and, oh yeah, wants to attend a wedding in Hawaii and will we send her a ticket? Sorry, that ship has sailed.

She calls my wife occasionally and drops little hints about money and tries to guilt her by saying her father is willing to cosign a student loan. What a guy! Call back when he's spent over $100,000 on your education.

She'll grow up eventually. Or not.

at least they were nice enough to forgive the charges. Some places are not quite so nice.

I'm sorry the step daughter turned out to be such a flake. I know many people (myself included) who would kill for that kind of opportunity. It's sad when folks don't appreciate the sacrifices you make for them. You're a good dad. Too bad she didn't realize it.

She may now. If she had been up front with us about wanting to drop out it wouldn't have been much of a problem. We would have been disappointed but not felt like we'd been used.

Long term for her is she'll now be stuck in student loan hell. Plus, if she'd graduated, we had committed to paying fifty percent of her masters or doctorate program. Not any more man!!

Sorry to hear about you disappointment Hobie, I'm just not able to take any sort of risk on my little darling right now. As it turned out, the company says he will still owe them $150.00 and they didn't drop him, or won't, for less than $400.00 fee. I was hoping they would, at $60.00/ month. He only works part-time and will owe us rent on the first
