On my 30th birthday trip we overheard a CM working custodial whose roommate was a monorail pilot. He talked about his job in custodial like he was a monorail pilot, he was just happy to be there.

Yep I think thats how most of us on SGT are. We seem to have a great deal of pride in the location and role we work and are continuously trying to improve our areas both for the guests and fellow cast. I know a couple of us here are (or were) on show quality teams and safety teams in our areas, and we really enjo what we do.
Randy, I think you hit the nail on the head! While we have to keep conversations positive, smile, blah blah 'basics' stuff on stage, it helps to have a place backstage or here on the internet or a friend on the phone to bitch and moan about work to.
CMGUY, I'm the same way. I only work 2 days a week during the semester, and I look forward to school breaks, long weekends, and holidays so I can go to work a couple more days. I love it there, mostly for my fellow CMs there and the ability to make some magic every once in a while ;) .

The saddest thing is that when I am not at WDW I will not shut up about it. I tell everyone that I work there because it is such a point of pride. Hell I personally consider it a better achievement then being a part of the 10% of students accepted to NYU's hospitality/tourism program. I mention the fact that I work on living with the land but then I go on and on and on about all the cool things I've done and seen. Like how doing my morning trackwalk I get to walk by all the baby alligators and they all come clamoring over thinking it's feeding time. I walked through chinatown the other day and they were selling dragonfruit and I was like "They are a member of the cactus family!". It's almost pathetic but I am so proud of what I do I can't help but smile every time I drive under that big purple arch with "Welcome to Walt Disney World!" on it...

Like someone told me many years ago, "the trick is to find a job that you would PAY to go to, then you know you are doing the right job!"

I have paid to come here. Still haven't made up what I spent to get here, especially after living expenses. I wouldn't go back for the world.

Now. granted, I am working on some stuff outside work to get some extra money coming in, but that's more so I can continue to work here full-time or part time with that attitude that comes when you don't have to be there. It's like I tell the people coming in after me. They don't know if I've been there a day longer than them or years. But I tell them to have fun with us at KSR, and if they don't want to have fun here, then please go elsewhere, and don't let my foot hit their butt on the way out.

My trainer at KSR said something similar on my first day. "I'm retired, I really don't care about 'working' anymore, I'm here for fun. This is a fun job. Once it stops being fun, it's time to move on." (I know he doesn't train anymore, and isn't full time anymore, but I'm pretty sure Ralph G is still around a day or 2 a week ... if you see him, tell him I said hi.)

Oh yeah, I made about 4K last summer working a just about all of it was gone by the time I left for school. I'm not making money, but that doesn't matter to me. I am though starting to become disillusioned with my current management team and I am biding my team till I can transfer. I am kinda between a rock and a hard place. Do I stay and continue to work at the Land, or do I transfer and risk getting an even worse attraction (i.e. Indiana Jones, Beauty and The Beast, or Little Mermaid). I wish there was a notes field on the online transfer form so I could request high spiel. The only way I could do that is if I did a paper form at casting, which is difficult to do when I am in New York. Sigh what should I do??? I would hate to think of myself as a bitter cast member but I really can't stand Future World West (and I am pretty sure they can't stand me...).

Maybe the thing to do is wait for summer, then come down for a few months and request that transfer right out of the gate. This time you will only be here a few months, right?
