Usually these criminals would not expect anyone to shot at them once they have started their attack. This action would change their behavior from predator to prey. They would then have to change their plans very quickly if they want to survive. Some of these people just want to go out in a hail of bullets and expect to be killed by the police, or they are planning on killing themselves once their bloodlust is satisfied. An armed society is a polite society. If criminals knew more people would be armed they would think twice before committing their crimes. ;)

Oh, I thought it was like you could use a gun to cauterize a wound, or perform an emergency tonsillectomy or something like that.

Just remember, guns save lives, but vaccines... those are the real killers.

This a quote from Dr. Jerry Pournelle. His writing partner, Larry Niven, followed it with his own addition:

"... but only after a very bloody first six months."

The difficulty is this relies on rational thought. It requires a rational comparison of risk/reward. Especially in the case of mass shootings, it doesn't seem to often involve rational anything.

In the case of mass shootings, it's usually only mass because it takes a while for someone else with a gun to show up and take out the shooter or threaten him enough to take out himself. But I agree, all those men involved in the more recent mass shootings were insane.

Goofyernmost wrote:Why don't you list individually, the number of people killed per day by cars driven by idiots texting, drinking or drugged. You wouldn't even have to list those that died or were maimed accidentally to surpass by thousands all incidents involving guns.
[snip]
However, I do believe that people have the right to own one, in a far more basic sense then the right to own a car.
I just ran across some thoughts on gun/auto ownership.

When you buy a car, you get a title issued by the state that shows who owned the car before and records the fact that you own it now.

So, when you buy a gun, the state should issue a gun title. The title will show that you own it, as well as all previous owners. And you pay for that title.
If you want to drive your car anywhere other than up and down your driveway, you have to get it registered with the State, and then renew your registration on an annual basis, and pay a fee for the privilege of doing that.

So, I'm all for gun registration. And not just once, but once a year. And, of course, you should pay a fee for the privilege of doing that.
Darn, before you can register your car, you have to get a safety inspection! and do so annually.
Guns should have to get an annual safety inspection. Is it still in proper working order? Is there a defect or broken part that could cause it to be accidentally discharged? This should be checked every year, just like cars. And, you should pay for it.
Annual excise tax on cars.

My state certainly does. It varies by jurisdiction. In mine its 4.71% of the assessed value annually! Perhaps they could do the same with guns. Make it really high in urban areas, really low in rural areas because guns don't kill people, people do. So fewer people, lower tax.
To drive a car, you need a license.

To own/use a gun, you should also need a license. The license can be given to you once you've had so many hours of proper training, just like a license permit. And, you shouldn't be able to get one unless you're of a certain age, and even then, serious restrictions on when you can use it until you are old enough to get a full blown license. And even then, you should have to go back and get another test from time to time to prove you still know how to use a gun safely.
To drive a car, you need insurance!

Agree. Same with gun owners. They should have insurance, especially liability insurance. No dropping the gun and killing someone by accident and saying OOPS and having the State give you a pass because it was an accident. I would like to see serious financial liabilities involved. That means mandatory insurance. And, if you have a checkered gun history, then you should go into the high risk pool.

Continued thoughts.

You can lose your driver's license and even your car for a myriad of infractions or upon a Doctor's orders.

Same with guns. Do something nutty with a gun, like getting caught drunk with a gun? Then the officer can just pull your gun license and your guns right there on the spot. Have them all towed away. And, you should have to go to a judge and hope he gives you them back. And if a mental health professional deems you or someone in your house as not capable of safely having guns, they should be required to report it, and someone should show up at your door take away the guns in your house (Sandy Hook) until a health professional tells a judge you're a-ok.
Late model cars are required to have tons of safety features, air bags, seat belts, 5 mph bumpers, safety glass, etc etc etc.

So should guns. Trigger locks? De-cocking levers? Gun safes?
Car manufactures all have manufacturer liability.

Why don't gun companies? Aren't there laws or those pushing for laws to shield gun manufacturers from liability? Why? Let's make them just like cars. In fact, we should have a NHTSA for guns too - an watchdog agency over gun manufacturers.
I'm sure others could come up with more. This was just off the top of my head.
I'm all in. Lets make cars just like guns. And yes, just like cars, you can buy all the guns you want to your hearts content. Just be sure you get them all registered, inspected, and insured.

Automobile ownership is not a right enumerated in the Constitution.
