Armed Robbery in Nassau, Follow-Up

Just saw this post on another board, concerning the armed robbery of guests from DCL and another cruise ship during a Segway tour in mid-November.

NASSAU, Bahamas – A 21-year-old man has been charged with robbing two groups of cruise ship passengers with a shotgun as they toured the capital of Nassau on Segways.

Court officials say Dekota Von Lockhart of Nassau was arraigned Thursday on 16 counts of armed robbery. He was not represented by a lawyer and was not required to enter a plea.

At least three cruise ship companies have canceled excursions into some parts of Nassau since police reported the two robberies.

Bahamas tourism director Vernice Walkine says police have increased foot and car patrols in popular tourist areas in response to the incidents.

More than 2 million cruise passengers visit Nassau each year.

Can you imagine how much money Nassau lost in tourism revenues because of this? They should make that guy pay the country back for the revenue they lost because he essentially chased business away because of his actions. They should make him walk around Nassau with a sign around his neck, saying "Because of my greed and stupidity, less money is coming into our country from tourism." And people should be encouraged to pelt him with garbage, rocks, raw sewage, etc., so he will think twice about pulling that stunt again. Because with fewer tourists stopping in the Bahamas, that means layoffs for those who are counting on those tourism-related jobs. Amazing how one person can impact the economy of a small nation like the Bahamas.

Haven't been to Nassau yet personally, but I know that when I was in Charlotte Amalie recently on a cruise stop over, I couldn't walk 10' without seeing a police officer. Saw some form of police car pass by very frequently as well. Similar could be said about San Juan right near the port area, noticed a huge police presence as well.

I felt pretty safe at both destinations, but then again, I wasn't running around in a large group of tourists on some guided tour with a known itinerary, which says something I am sure. Yeah, I had a bigger camera and was noticeable as a tourist a bit, but those guided tour things, that's gotta be a thief's honey pot really. If you pass by the same place at the same time on the same day of every week, well, you're just asking for problems.

There's this one episode of COPS where this one officer being followed by the camera crew says he's from Jamaica, and in Jamaica they put two or even three cops in each patrol car--too dangerous to put just one cop in a car. He was saying how different it was in the U.S.. I bet he appreciated how much more room in the cruiser he had to put suspects in--can you imagine a cruiser full of cops in Jamaica, they arrest somebody and have to possibly wait for a paddywagon to pick up the suspect because the car has no room? Because I don't think they're going to make the perp sit on the officer's lap or anything. If it's one suspect, okay, but two or more, they're gonna need another car. Or the aforementioned paddywagon.
