Pirates 2 review

I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised at number 2. It had a whole Empire Strikes Back feel to it. The true Star Wars fans would agree with me, I think. Long live the dark side middle story!! So much was going on that I wonder how it will all be wrapped up. A small part of me is hoping that Elizabeth will finally go off with Captain Jack but that wouldn't fit the Disney style happy ending. But we did go on opening night and let me tell you when that character walked down the stairs at the end, a collective jaw dropping happened in the audience. I had been waiting for that but wasn't quite sure how it would tie in. And now I have to wait a whole year. GAH!!! I have to say, the bayou scenes were very moving and it made me feel things I hadn't felt for a long time. That's a whole other history there. Sorry, kids. The acting was superb and the doublecrossing had all of us laughing. But during one scene William does something that only Jack and I noticed and we applauded it. (5 points if anyone knows what it is. Answer at the end of this entry. No fair cheating!!! ) Makes me want to be a pirate all over again. Any thoughts from everyone? What is your opinion about the new movie?

Did anyone else notice this??: Answer below

( During the scene where William is at the crow's nest he pulls an Errol Flynn and slides down the sail using his knife. He also places his knife in his teeth. Yay for going back to tradition!!! )

I have to agree that this was good, but I still think that the first one was better. In my opinion, Barbossa is just a better villain and helped make the first movie great plus the music seemed to be lacking in this one. Okay, music may be a silly thing to say brings a movie down but the first movie had one of the best scores ever and for this one I didn't even notice the music. That's just my opinion.

Well given the fact that I read lips and I can't read Depp's to save my life I still enjoyed it, I knew going in this was a "middle" movie connecting the 1st and last movies so I just sat and enjoyed the ride.

The one weird thing for me is there's no Novelization of the movie, there's a picture book and a Junior Novellation (that's what it said) that's like a Readers Digest Condensed book that's useless....

I mean Superman Returns, X3 all had paperback releases, why no Pirates?

But I will admit the after credits "weenie" this time just didn't measure up to the 1st movie......

I call that the "Star Wars" syndrome - you know, when the prequel trilogy came out, everyone thought it sucked compared to the first films... but I think that's just because everyone's expectations were so darn high. That said: I quite enjoyed the film and thought the Empire comment above was appropo (and yeah, I caught the knife-down-the-sail bit). Of course, I went in with very low expectations.

My only real complaint (and it's hardly unique; I've seen it posted elsewhere) lies with the character of Captain Jack Sparrow in this film, and I'm not sure if I should blame Johnny Depp or the screenwriters for it. In the first film, Captain Jack was portrayed as a bumbling fool and coward, but it's all an act to disguise the fact that he's a great pirate. In this film, Captain Jack was portrayed as a great pirate, but it's all an act to disguise the fact that he's a bumbling fool and coward. This may seem to be an insignificant difference, but.... <shrug> Still, great film, and I loved Davy Jones - the Kracken attack sequence is going to give kids nightmares for years!

Yeah, I've had a lot of people agree on the ESB style of it.

Lot of people are also like "Eh, Davy Jones isn't that great." Well yeah, but wait until World's End when everything goes down. I all ready know a lot of what will happen and all I have to say is, Damn. Best Live Action movie from Disney, EVER.

Did anyone see the nods to the attraction again, the new twist on an old joke, as well as staying till after the credits rolled (Is this the end for the pooch?)?

Well, here's to Pirates for being Disney's greatest film, breaking three records and showing that the words "Disney" and "sequel" can exsist together and not be a bad thing.
